Yawm Al-Jumu’ah (Friday) is our weekly day of ‘Eid (recurring festival), during which we gather at larger Masajid. Allāh Akbar! This is indeed a tremendous blessing from Allāh, and we express our gratitude for it.
Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “We (Muslims) are the last (to come) but (will be) the foremost on the Day of Resurrection though the former nations were given the Holy Scriptures before us. And this was their day (Friday) the celebration of which was made compulsory for them but they differed about it. So Allāh gave us the guidance for it (Friday) and all the other people are behind us in this respect: the Jews' (holy day is) tomorrow (i.e. Saturday) and the Christians' (is) the day after tomorrow (i.e. Sunday).” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 876]
Attendance at Jumu’ah prayer is one of the obligatory acts for Muslim men, unless they have a valid excuse not to participate. Allāh states: “O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the Ṣalāh on Al-Jumu’ah (Friday), then Fas’aw (hasten) to the remembrance of Allāh…” [Sūrah Al-Jumu’ah (62): 8]
It is important to note that attending prayer without tranquility and dignity is prohibited. Thus, the term "hasten" does not imply rushing, as some may do when they arrive late and are trying to catch up on prayer. Imām Ibn Kathīr (Raḥimahullāh) in his Tafsīr of this verse explained: “The meaning of Sa’y (hasten) here does not refer to walking quickly. It only refers to the importance of it.”
He further conveyed that Qatādah (Raḥimahullāh) said: “Then hasten to the remembrance of Allāh means that you have to hasten to the prayer with your heart and actions, and walk to it.” Therefore, it is advisable for those attending the Jumu’ah prayer to prepare in advance and proceed calmly to the Masjid.
I beseech Allāh to accept our acts of worship. Aameen.
