*Falling into deep sleep might invalidate your wudu (ablution).*
Narrated Mu'awiyah (rad):
Allah's Messenger (saW) said: "The eye (when awake) is the string of the anus (to stop air escaping), and if the two eyes sleep the string is untied" . [Reported by Ahmad and At-Tabarani who added, "Whoever sleeps should perform ablution]"
Bulugh al-Maram 80
Scholars differ on the ruling of the above hadith.
Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
If a person is not sure whether he fell asleep or dozed off, but one of the two happened, his wudoo’ is not invalidated. Al-Shaafa’i said in al-Umm: *To be on the safe side, he should do wudoo’.* And this is bcos anything can happen during sleeping.
But if the sleep is just a doze-off, then majority of scholars agree that wudu is not invalidated based on hadith of al-Bukhaari (137) and Muslim (361) from ‘Abbaad ibn Tameem from his paternal uncle, who said: A complaint was made to the Prophet (S) about when one thinks that something has happened whilst he praying. He said: “Do not stop until you hear a sound or notice a smell.
