A Parent's Best Gift
How much money have we spent on our children? How many gifts have we given them over the years! And how many toys and books! We all do our research to put them in the best of schools, and to provide for their well-being and maintenance. Every parent knows the pride that they feel when they see their children flourish and succeed. And all of that is natural, and beautiful, and good.
But there is a gift more important than all the money and good food and physical comfort you can give to a child.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "A parent cannot gift their child with any gift better than beautiful manners" [al-Tirmidhī].
Parents: when was the last time we took an active interest in cultivating the akhlāq and adāb of our children?
Notice how your children interact with one another and make sure they are kind, compassionate, and caring; not rude, and obnoxious and vulgar. Inculcate in them respect of elders. Teach them to share and be generous. Toughen them up with the reality of patience and acceptance of qadr when things don't go according to their desires. And most importantly: demonstrate in your own life what it means to be a person of dignified manners, for you can't teach a skill if you don't have it yourself. When you live your own life with good manners, your actions will speak louder than any speech you will give.
Gift your children the best gift any parent can give: good manners. And begin with yourself, and they will follow.
