 The battle of Badr and why Muslims took part in that battle 

Alhamdulillah, the battle of Badr was fought in 2H and was the battle the Muslims fought with small band of armies who were 313 against 1000 well armed of the Quraysh pagans but Allah grants them victory against them.

Allah says,

Aal-e-Imran 3:13

Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] – one fighting in the cause of Allah and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight. But Allah supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.

So Allah s.w.t made the believers to see the disbelievers as small band and so they had confident and fought against them.

In that battle seventy strong men of the Quraysh were killed like Abu jahl, rabi'ah, umayya all were killed.

Narrated by Abdullah r.a saying,

While the Prophet (ﷺ) was prostrating, surrounded by some of Quraish, `Uqba bin Abi Mu'ait brought the intestines (i.e. Abdominal contents) of a camel and put them over the back of the Prophet. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not raise his head, (till) Fatima, came and took it off his back and cursed the one who had done the harm. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "O Allah! Destroy the chiefs of Quraish, Abu Jahl bin Hisham, `Utba bin Rabi`al, Shaba bin Rabi`a, Umaiya bin Khalaf or Ubai bin Khalaf." (The sub-narrator Shu`ba, is not sure of the last name.) I saw these people killed on the day of Badr battle and thrown in the wellexcept Umaiya or Ubai whose body parts were mutilated but he was not thrown in the well.

The battle of Badr was fought when the Muslims in Medina after migration heard the route that Abu sufyan is bringing the goods of the pagans to medina, so the Muslims decided to stop them and took their goods as they did to them in Makkah.

So Abu sufyan wrote letter to the pagans to come out and defend their wealth.

But the Muslims later did not go out but Abu sufyan wrote to them to stop the battle but Abu jahl has already prepared an army and decided to go and finish the Muslims thinking they will have victory that day. But everything turn against them and were humiliated.
