THE BATTLE OF AL-GHABAH OR DHU QARAD
This battle was carried out against some troops from Banu Fazārah which attacked on and committed an act of freebooting against the milk she-camels of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him). It was the first battle fought by the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) after Hudaibiyya and before Khaibar.
Al-Bukhāry stated that it was carried out three years before Khaibar. According to the majority of Scholars, this expedition took place before the battle of Khaibar.
It has been narrated that Salamah Ibn Al-Akwa said: "The Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) sent his slave Rabī'ah with his camels to a nearby pasture. I also went there for went there for the same purpose, riding the horse of Abu Talhah. In the morning, 'Abdur-Rahmān Al-Fazāry made a raid, drove away all the camels and killed the shepherd. I asked Rabī'ah to take the horse to Abu Talhah and inform the Messenger of Allāh of what happened. Then I stood upon a hill, turned my face to Madīnah and shouted thrice: "Come to our help!" Afterwards, I chased raiders, shooting at them arrows while saying: "I am the son of Al-Akwa; today is the day of defeat for the mean." By Allāh, I continued shooting at them and hamstringing their animals. Whenever one of them turned upon me, I would hide myself behind a tree, shoot at him and hamstring his horse. They entered a narrow gorge and I ascended a mountain to throw them with stones. I remained pursuing them until all camels were released. I continued shooting at them till they dropped more than thirty gowns and thirty spears to lighten their burden. Accordingly, I began putting a mark on everything they dropped so that the Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) and his Companions might recognise them. Upon reaching a narrow valley, they sat down to eat something and I sat on the top of a tapering rock. Four of them ascended the mountain coming towards me. I asked them: "Do you know me?" They said: "No! Who are you?" I said: "I am Salamah Ibn Al-Akwa. I can kill anyone of you, but none of you can kill me!" So they returned. I did not leave my place till I saw the cavalries of the Messenger of Allāh, coming through the trees. In front of them was Akhtram, behind him was Abu Qatādah and Al-Miqdād Ibn Al-Aswad. 'Abdur-Rahmān Al-Fazāry and Akhram combatted. Akhram hamstrung 'Abdur-Rahmān's horse, but 'Abdur-Rahmān stabbed him with his sword. 'Abdur-Rahmān rode Akhram's horse. Seeing this, Abu Qatādah fought 'Abdur-Rahmān fiercely, then smote him with his sword. The enemies consequently run away and I pursued them. Shortly before sunset, they reached a valley with a well of water called Dhu Qarad. Running in hot pursuit, I turned them out of the valley before they could drink a drop of water. When the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) and his Companions came later on, I said: "O Messenger of Allāh, let me take one hundred men to track the plunderers. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) replied: "Ibn Al-Akwa, what you have taken is enough, show magnanimity! They have reached Ghatafān." He added: "Our best cavalryman is Abu Qatādah and our best footman is Salamah." Then, he gave me two shares of the spoils; one for the cavalryman and another for the footman. Finally, I mounted behind the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) on his she-camel called Al-Adbaa, while coming back to Madīnah.
