*THE BATTLE OF KHAIBAR (Muharram, 7 A.H.)*
Khaibar was a strongly fortified town, containing forts and farms. It is eighty miles north of Madīnah, with unhealthy climate.
THE REASONS OF THE BATTLE
After the conclusion of Al-Hudaibiyya treaty, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) settled matters with the major party of anti-islam tripartite coalition, Quraish. He then intended to settle affairs with the other two wings, the Jews and Najd tribe to spread peace as well as security, and help Muslims propagate the message of Allāh (Glory be to Allāh).
Khaibar was a seedbed of schemes as well as conspiracies, in addition to being a source of military provocations and war instigation centre. Therefore, it came on top of Muslims' agenda.
The people of Khaibar had previously incited Banu Quraizah to practise treachery and betrayal against Muslims. They contacted with the tripe Ghatafān as well as Bedouins, and even planned to fight Muslim and kill the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) . Envoys were repeatedly sent to them for peaceful settlement, but all that was in vain. Accordingly, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) decided to fight plotters such as Salām Ibn Al-Huqaiq and Asir Ibn Zārim.
MARCHING TO KHAIBAR
Ibn Is'hāq said: "After returning from Al-Hudaibiyya, the Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) stayed in Madīnah one month and several days, then he went to Khaibar in Muharram. Interpreters of the Glorious Qur-ān said: "Capturing Khaibar has been a Divine promise from Allāh (Glory be to Him); He says:
Surah Al-Fath, Verse 20:
Allah has promised you abundant spoils that you will capture, and He has hastened for you this, and He has restrained the hands of men from you, that it may be a sign for the believers, and that He may guide you to a Straight Path.
THE NUMBER OF THE MUSLIM ARMY
The hypocrites and people of weak faith abstained from joining the Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) in Al-Hudaibiyya, so Allāh revealed to him the following verse:
Surah Al-Fath, Verse 15:
Those who lagged behind will say, when you set forth to take the spoils, "Allow us to follow you," They want to change Allah's Words. Say: "You shall not follow us; thus Allah has said beforehand." Then they will say: "Nay, you envy us." Nay, but they understand not except a little.
The Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) consequently asked those who were willing to fight in the Cause of Allāh to accompany him in his march against Khaibar. Only one thousand and four hundred people, who had pledged allegiance under the tree, responded to him. He selected Sibaa' Ibn 'Urfuta Al-Ghifary to run the affairs of Madīnah. Ibn Is'hāq said: "It was Numailah Ibn 'Abdullāh who was chosen by the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him) to run the affairs of Madīnah.
Abu Huraira (may Allāh be pleased with him) came to Madīnah after having converted to Islam. He performed the dawn prayer with Siba', then asked to be provided with weapons to join the Prophet (Blessings and Peace of Allāh be upon him). Upon reaching the Muslims' camp, the Companions shared their weapons with him.
THE HYPOCRITES' CONTACT WITH THE JEWS
The chief of hypocrites 'Abdullāh Ibn Ubayy sent an enjoy to the Jews of Khaibar, telling them that Muslims had planned to invade their land. He encouraged them to defeat Muslims, claiming that they were larger in number that Muslims in addition to being well-equipped. Immediately, the Jews dispatched Kināna Ibn Abu Al-Huqaiq and Haudha Ibn Qais to the tribe of Ghatafān, their former alley, requesting help in return for giving them half the harvest that their farms could yield if they managed to beat Muslims.
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur-ān 51:55)
