FAJR REMINDER: THE EVIL OF ENVY

Envy manifests as the desire for the blessings bestowed upon others to be removed, driven by the fact that the envier covets those same blessings. However, the loss of a blessing by the envied—due to Allāh’s Divine Will—does not result in that blessing being transferred to the envier.
Envious individuals wish for blessings to be stripped away, even if those blessings do not come to them. It is essential to recognize that only Allāh grants blessings, and He bestows them upon whomever He chooses. Indeed, harboring envy is a detrimental ailment that can afflict individuals and lead to the destruction of their good deeds. As narrated by Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu), the Prophet (ﷺ) cautioned: “Beware of envy, for it consumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood or grass.” [Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4903]
By Allāh! The malice of the envious is an ever-present threat from which we should constantly seek Allāh’s Protection, not only when we are affected. This lesson was brought to light when our beloved Prophet (ﷺ) experienced enchantment; he sought Allāh’s Protection as directed: “And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” [Sūrah Al-Falaq (113): 5]
Moreover, the life of Prophet Yūsuf (‘Alayhi Salām) is an exemplary case of envy, as he faced trials inflicted by his own brothers. His narrative stands out as a profound and detailed account among the stories of the Prophets in the Qur'ān, with an entire Sūrah dedicated to him that discusses his life explicitly. This Sūrah unveils various human frailties such as hatred, envy, pride, deception, and desire, while also highlighting noble traits like patience, loyalty, and bravery. Indeed, Allāh often tests individuals through those closest to them, particularly their family.
O people! Let us embody true faith and refrain from envying one another. Instead, let us be like brothers and desire for others the good that we wish for ourselves.
I beseech Allāh to purify us from envy and inspire us to be kind to one another. Aameen.
