TAFSEER OF Qur’an 104 (SUURAH AL-HUMAZAH), WITH CONTEXT, COMMENTARY, MEANINGS, and PRACTICAL LESSONS WE CAN APPLY IN OUR DAILY LIFE
DAILY ISLAMIC REMINDER. Yaumul ahad, 22nd day of Rajab, 1447AH, Sunday, 11th January, 2026.
*_TAFSEER OF Qur’an 104 (SUURAH AL-HUMAZAH), WITH CONTEXT, COMMENTARY, MEANINGS, and PRACTICAL LESSONS WE CAN APPLY IN OUR DAILY LIFE_*. BismilLah.
This suurah is about Condemnation of slander, mockery, arrogance, and obsession with wealth.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
Suurah Al-Humazah was revealed in Makkah, a society where:
Social status was measured by wealth and lineage. The powerful people mocked the poor and weak people. Backbiting, name-calling, and humiliation were common.
Wealth was seen as a guarantee of honour and security. Some scholars mention individuals like Umayyah ibn Khalaf or Al-Walīd ibn al-Mughīrah as examples, but the surah is universal, addressing anyone who displays these traits.
This suurah strongly warns that:
Moral corruption of the tongue and heart leads to spiritual destruction
Text, Meaning & Commentary:
Verse 1
وَيْلٌ لِكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ
“Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.”
Commentary:
“Woe (Wayl)”: A severe warning, some scholars say it is a valley in Hell. Humazah: One who mocks openly (gestures, actions).
Lumazah: One who insults secretly (speech, gossip)
🔹 Islam condemns both public mockery and private backbiting
Verses 2–3
الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ
“Who collects wealth and counts it repeatedly, thinking his wealth will make him immortal.”
Commentary:
Constant counting shows obsession, greed, and insecurity
Wealth creates false confidence and arrogance. Such people believe money protects them from loss, death, or accountability
🔹 Wealth becomes a test when it replaces reliance on ALLAH. To be continued tomorrow in Shaa ALLAH. *_May ALLAH Azzawajal keep guiding and protecting us from any satanic influences_*. Aameen.
