DARK EMOTIONS...
Episode Five
Ali was still in his pensive mood, as he felt a shock and flounder, his vigour was gone, his skin gray and dark, leached of life. He seemed to be dying with Safiyah. But his own was an ailment of the heart, not the bones and blood, as the doctor said about Safiyah's illness. A cancer, a gnawing riddling Safiyah with rot and tumours. He shivered, despite the sun above, not to mentioned the hot summer air. All alone to himself, whilst he nurses a nasty fright. He thought of observing two raka'ats of non-obligatory prayer, he believes only Allah can hear the silent whispers of a lonely heart. "Ali, Ali!!! The table is set, (his mother announced). Few minutes later, Ali appeared to his mother looking so disquieted. The food, he had no interest for it." His mother was perturbed by his capricious behaviour. Ali, why are you doing this to yourself, you've been hurting me. Ever since you heard about Safiyah's illness, everything about you seems to be at it base, and please, do you recall that Safiyah explained to us that, emotional stress can also trigger asthma, do you want me to start running helter-skelter again? (She asked in a preemptory manner). That is it Ummi. And that is what my son? You just mentioned it that Safiyah said "emotional stress could trigger asthma. Meaning! She is my saviour. Ummi, Safiyah saved my life, she's my everything, my hope, my joy, my all, in fact, she's the blood that runs through my vein. Ummi, I can't live without Safiyah, she's part of me now, I can't let her die. Ummi, please just support me, you should know, I will never willingly disobey you, at the same time, we have to try our best to save a dying soul. My Jannah lies beneath your feet as I will never wish to banter with that too. Ummi, I will appreciate it, if you can just reconsider her. Allah had used her as a " means" to save my life, so, we shouldn't repay her with unkindness. If it's all about money, Alhamdulillah, we are blessed enough to take good care of her to any length. All I request from you is your support and DU'A (prayer). Ummi, can you please be patient and just endorse her for me!!! She's my dream, my all. See mother, the last time, I visited them, her mother showed me her dairy, I was so surprised to noticed that, Safiyah was still donating part of her salary to the orphanage, even when she knows that, she needs more money to get drugs for herself, she doesn't stop helping the needy. She had a plan of owning a hospital, a school, and also had the potential to cosset the orphans. Ummi, do you want all this dream to die with her? For the sake of Allah mother, please, let's join hands together to get Safiyah the best treatment ever. (He tried hard not to cry, though every inch of him hoped to).
Uhmm!! (Ali's mother breathe out) it wasn't as if I'm callous neither do I want to be as "hard as nails". I was only trying to be a good mother, I was only trying to be protective. But it seems you are as" bold as brass", no problem my son, you can go ahead with everything worthy of doing for her, I'm ready to support you with everything you need, I will also join you in praying for her, as well as fasting on her behalf. I can remember I have a friend whose sister had suffer from such ailment before, then she was treated in the united state, and she has been doing greatly up till this moment. So, probably we will be moving Safiyah to America for a better regimen, and I'm ready to take all the bills. I pray to Allah to forgive me as I was only scared of seeing you becoming a widower at a tender age.(She replied as she was still feeling conscience-stricken over her outburst). Alhamdulillah, Ummi, you mean, you are ready to stand by us, both with your wealth and your time? (He asked with a mild astonishment), yes my son, I'm ready to bear it all. Jazaakumullahu khayran Ummi, thank you so much, may Allah forgive us all. I love youuuu (He replied his mother showing pleasure of contentment). So, tell me, what is the next step to take, because there shouldn't be any delay again. Yes Ummi, should I call her now to inform her about the good news or probably I should go there, to have a fruitful discussion with them. The second option will be better, and don't forget to get them prepared for the travelling. Alright mother, but one more thing before I leave (he winked an eye at his mother), and what is that? I will like us to prepare about the aqeed nikkah (Islamic marriage rites). Ali!! Aqeed what? Yes Ummi, you know, probably Safiyah will be travelling for her surgery very soon, and islamically, it's not accepted for a woman to travel on her own, not even for a night. She has to go with her "maharram" (i.e. her, father, her husband, her maternal brother, or her son), and are you not her husband to be? Ummi, it doesn't count that way; me, my parents, two or more of my relatives and friends have to be present and her parents too, alongside with their relatives, whereby her father has to announced it that he has given me, his daughter to marry). Heehee!! (this is serious). I'm tired of you true Muslims. It's okay then, I'm in supportive of that too. I hope you won't lecture me all day, and want to be on your way now. Right away mother, I really appreciate you for the acceptance, much obliged. (He left his mother feeling exultant).
Ali received a rapturous welcome at Safiyah's residence. Assalamu alaykum ma, wa alaykumussalam my dear. How are you doing, hope you're good? You're looking indisposed today or have you been sick all this while? (She asked with fear written all over her face). No ma, Alhamdulillah, I'm fine ma. I believe Safiyah is around ma, yes she's. Safiyahhh, your attention is needed, Ali is around. "Safiyah's heart beat with such violence that it seemed likely to breathe her ribs. She sucked in a breath, fighting the urge to cry. "These fears are mine. They always have been. They always will be. He cannot succumb to this. I won't let him." Now impending towards the living, she was dressed in her full black hijab, walking slowly as she took a sit beside her mother. Like a person just waking up, Safiyah blinked rapidly. She cast a single glance at Ali, then she lowered her gaze. Na'am, so good to see you again. I'm here to inform you both about my mother's arrangement, she said she will like Safiyah's surgery to be done overseas, in other to get her the best regimen. (A corner of Safiyah's mouth twitches, but she doesn't smile). And about our marriage, nothing is stopping that, as I have accepted Safiyah's pickle as my faith.(Ali expressed his words, feeling optimistic). (Safiyah smiled then, her teeth glinting in a slim beam of a moonlight). My son, I'm indeed grateful to you, may Allah ease your affairs, may you never experience hardship in your life. (Safiyah's mother replied feeling excited). And you Safiyah, won't you say anything to this, because all I noticed you doing was just smiling! Ummi, I'm speechless for now, or which of Allah's favour will I deny? So, all I have to say now is Alhamdulillah, for His blessings and mercies over me, I'm also indeed indebted to you Ali, you have lighten up my soul with this, giving me hope that I can still live long to be around my loved ones, though, I never wish to be a burden for you, but it seems Allah want to use you to wipe away my fears and tears, Jazaakallahu khayran!! ( Safiyah replied as she heaved a steady breath). "Aameen to all the prayers ma, albeit, it what is expected of me to do. (he replied as his eyes shone with elation.) And I will implore us to be more prayerful and we need to be more patient, I pray everything works out perfectly. (They all chorused Aameen).
The date was fixed, the day is here, and everything was set. Safiyah's paternal uncle was around and three of their other relatives waiting patiently for their visitors. Of course, Safiyah's mother took credit for everything. Even as Safiyah was laced into her beautiful hijab, an hour from marrying the man of her choice. One of her cousin crowed across a brimful glass. "Look at your bearing, those are of sufiyan's bones," (Sufiyan was known to be Safiyah's father's name) slender, graceful, like a bird." Safiyah felt nothing of sort. "If I was a bird, then I could fly away with Ali."
Here they are, Ali, his mother, four of their relatives and his bosom friend. Safiyah's mother received them with pleasure. I'm so glad to see you all, you all are welcome. They exchange pleasantries and were offered seats. Prayer was said by one of Safiyah's cousin. "Alhamdulillah, that we all arrived here safely, and may Allah put His blessings upon what we are here to do. I believe we all know the reason for this gathering, or should I say we are here to meet ourselves for the the first time, then pick a date for their marriage?(Safiyah's uncle expressed his words indirectly). "We appreciate this concession, and we are most grateful for your hospitality. But sir, I will appreciate it more if the " knot is tied" today. (Ali's mother replied with half-smile on her face). "Whilst the colloquy was still on, Ali was intently eyeing Safiyah, "she is indeed a rare gem with a warm voice and beaming smile that light up any venue in which she appears", deep inside him, he was so elated, he can't just wait to start cuddling her." Alright then, we don't have any alteration about that too, we just want to be sure if you are actually ready to marry our beloved daughter. (Safiyah's uncle replied following the spring, drawing out the marriage). After the marriage ceremony, the duo was excused, as Ali looked forward with a radiant expression, and feebly pressed Safiyah's hand. "Alhamdulillah, the knot is tied, you're now mine forever, you fill my world with so much happiness and joy. You are my knight in shining armour. You are someone for whom, I have been waiting for all my life. Thank you for being a part of my life, baby." I love you my beddable bride. (Ali said this looking straight into her eyes). Within a few swipes, Safiyah was already feeling the burst of romantic and she moved closer to him. "It feels like you have pumped a new life into me, I feel like a completely different person. I feel more confident about myself. Thank you so much for walking into my life. I'd rather replace my words of love for you with kisses of love. It's a much better deal, isn't it? "She smiled and she kissed him."
The marriage was celebrated peacefully and a date fixed for their travelling.
Uhmm!! What if Safiyah don't make it, what will be Ali's faith?
