"I am as My servant thinks I am." [Hadīth qudsi]
Staying away from Allāh, the Exalted, only bears bitter fruit, and the gifts of intelligence, strength, beauty and knowledge will all turn to calamity and loss if they are kept away from the guidance of Allāh, the Exalted, and deprived of His blessings. Hence, Allāh has warned people of the consequences of staying away from Him.
If you are walking down the street and a car comes towards you at high speed and you feel it will hit you and kill you, you have no choice but to act quickly and try to get away... Allāh wants to warn His slaves that they face a similar kind of destruction if they turn away from Him, so He urges them to seek safety with Him alone:
Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 50-51:
فَفِرُّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
So flee to Allāh (from His Torment to His Mercy Islamic Monotheism), verily, I (Muhammad [Blessings and Peace be upon him]) am a plain warner to you from Him.
وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ إِنِّي لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
And set not up (or worship) any other ilahan (god) along with Allāh [Glorified be He (Alone), Exalted above all that they associate as partners with Him]. Verily, I (Muhammad [Blessings and Peace be upon him]) am a plain warner to you from Him.
Turning to Allāh requires a person to renew himself, reorganise his life, develop a better relationship with his Lord, and do better deeds. It is the start of a new covenant that is summed up in the following du'ā.
"Allahumma anta rabbi lā ilāha illā anta. Khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika ma istata'tu. A 'ūdhu bika min sharri ma sana'ta. Abū'u laka bi ni'imatika 'alayya wa abū'u bi dhanbi faghfir li fa innahu lā yaghfiru adh-dhunūba illāh anta.
(O' Allāh, You are my Lord and there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your slave. And I am trying my best to keep my oath (of faith) to You and to live in the hope of Your promise. I seek refuge in You from my greatest evil-deeds. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I acknowledge my sins. So forgive me, for none but You can forgive sins)."
If you fail in one of your deeds, you should not give in to despair; do not worry and never doubt that you will find a solution."
