Taqwa and what it is?
Alhamdulillah, Taqwa means fear
It came from tuqaah meaning precaution.
Allah says in Quran,
Aal-e-Imran 3:28
Let not believers take disbelievers as allies [i.e., supporters or protectors] rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing [i.e., no association] with Allāh, except when taking precaution against them in prudence.[1] And Allāh warns you of Himself, and to Allāh is the [final] destination.
From this ayah, it is forbidden for a believer to take a christian or jew as a friend except as a precaution fearing his harm or danger.
But in the heart to despise him.
And the word used for precaution was tuqaah.
So as we take precaution to the prohibitions of Allah and following his commandments, than can one say we have taqwa of Allah.
As reported in hadith,
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil fora Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.
Sahih Muslim 2564.
A man came to Ubayy Ibn Ka'b R. A asking about taqwa?
He R. A replied, taqwa is when one is walking in a thorny forest and he raises his clothes and protects his body from injured. Then he has fear of Allah
Meaning whenever everyone is sinning and we changed and do what Allah wants, then we are claimed to have taqwa of Allah.
