*THE BATTLE OF UHUD continues*
*AN OFFENSIVE SCHEME*
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) organised his army and lined up them for light. He chose a platoon of fifty skilled bowmen under the command of 'Abdullāh Ibn Jubair Ibn An-Nu'amān Al-Ansary. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) ordered them to centre on a mountain located in the northern bank of the valley of Qanah, known later as the mountain of bowmen, in the southeast side of the Muslims' camp.
The goal of this tactic was contained in the Prophet's order to the commander of the bowmen: "Shoot a barrage of arrows at the enemy cavalrymen so that they cannot attack us from behind. Keep your places and don't leave them whether we become victorious or not." He said to the bowmen: "Protect our backs. If you see us being killed, don't support us. If you see us collect any booties, don't share us." Al-Bukhāry narrated that the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "If you see us being annihilated, don't leave your positions till I have given you my commands. And if you see us defeat the enemy, don't leave your place till I have ordered you to do so." This squad managed to abridge the only gap through which the polytheists' cavalrymen could infiltrate into the ranks of the Muslims and encircle them.
Al-Mundhir Ibn 'Amr was responsible for the right wing of the army while az-Zubayr Ibnul-'Awwām and Al-Midād Ibn Al-Aswad were responsible for the left wing of the army. Az-Zubayr was tasked to resist the enemy cavalrymen under Khālid Ibn Al-Walid. On the other hand, a great group of brave Muslims were at the forefront of the ranks. This scheme was very wise and accurate as it demonstrated the ingenious military leadership of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). No proficient commander could set a plan like that of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him); he occupied the best position in the battleground though he camped at it after the enemy. He protected the backs and right side of his troops through the high hills. He safeguard his left side and rear ranks (when fight breaks out) by abridging the only gap that was left by the Muslim army. He chose a high place to take refuge in (in case Muslims were defeated), escape from the capture of the enemy and inflict grave losses upon them if they wanted to occupy his camp and advance towards him. He also compelled his enemy to occupy a low place that made it difficult for them to achieve any further benefits of victory if they should be triumphant and escape from the capture of Muslims if they should be victorious. Moreover, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) made up for the personnel shortage by selecting an excellent group of brave and prominent Muslims to be in the vanguard.
THE PROPHET (Blessings and Peace be upon him) STIRS THE SPIRIT OF COURAGE WITHIN THE ARMY
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) forbade them to begin fight without his order. He wore two armours and exhorted his followers to combat and showing patience. He also began to encourage them and arouse their enthusiasm and energy. He unsheathed a sharp sword and said: "Who can take this sword and use it duly?" Thereupon many Companions hurried up to take the sword like 'Ali Ibn Abu Tālib, Az-Zubayr Ibnul-'Awwām and 'Umar Ibnul-Khattāb. But Abu Dujānah Simāk Ibn Khasrashah went towards the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and asked: "How can I take this sword duly, Allāh's Messenger?" He said: "To behead the enemy thereby till it becomes curved." He said: "I will use it properly, Allāh's Messenger." Thereupon the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) gave him the sword.
Abu Dujānah was a brave man who was swaggering about at fight. He had a red headband which if he fastened around his head, people knew that he would fight to death. When he took the sword, he fastened the headband around his head and swaggered around the fighters. Thereupon the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "This way of walking is detestable by Allāh except for this situation (fighting the enemy)."
