*THE COMPANIONS ASSEMBLE AROUND THE PROPHET (Blessings and Peace be upon him)*
Hardly had the most prominent Companions who were in the vanguard noted that the situation changed or heard the Prophet's voice when they hurried up to him. But it was too late. As the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) sustained serious wounds and six fighters of the supporters were killed. The seventh member was impaired by many injuries. Only Sa'ad and Talhah kept defending the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) heroically. So they immediately formed a fortified hedge of their bodies and arms around the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and protected him against the enemy's attacks. At the forefront of those heroes was Abu Bakr who was the first to reach the Prophet's position. Ibn Hibbān reported that 'Ā'ishah said: "Abu Bakr said: 'When it was the day of Uhud, people left the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and I was the first one to go back to him. Suddenly I saw man fighting and defending the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). I said twice: "You must be Talhah. May my parents be sacrificed for you." (I missed a good chance but I said to myself: "Let a man of your people be dear to you). I didn't get involved in fight till Abu 'Ubaidah Ibnul-Jarrāh had overtaken me as though he was a bird. Then we hastened to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and found Talhah badly wounded in front of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). Thereupon the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Take your brother. He will certainly enter Paradise." An arrow was shot at the Prophet's cheek, causing two rings of the helmet to penetrate it. So I went to remove them from the Prophet's cheek but Abu 'Ubaidah besought me to let him do that by himself. He pulled out the arrow by his mouth lest he should make the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) feel pains. While doing so, he ('Ubaidah) broke one of his incisors. I wanted to pluck out the other ring, but Abu 'Ubaidah begged me to let him do that as well. He pulled it out with his teeth till he broke another incisor of his. Then the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Take your brother, he will certainly enter Paradise." Then we turned to Talhah who sustained nineteen wounds to treat him. In another narration: "We got him out of a hole with his body filled with more than sixty wounds and his fingers cut off." During these difficult moments a band of the Muslim heroes gathered around the Prophet, including Abu Dujānah, Mus'ab Ibn 'Umair, 'Ali Ibn Abu Tālib, Sahl Ibn Hanīf, Mālik Ibn Sinān (the father of Abu Sa'īd Al-Khudri), Umm 'Imārah Nusaybah bint Ka'ab Al-Maziniyyah, Qatādah Ibn An-Nu'amān, 'Umar Ibnul-Khattāb, Hātib Ibn Abu Balt'ah and Abu Talhah.

*THE POLYTHEISTS ESCALATE THEIR PRESSURE*
As the number of the polytheists increased, they also intensified their attacks and pressure upon Muslim. The Prophet, as a result, fell into one of the holes which Abu 'Amir, the Debauchee, dug and it scratched his knee. 'Ali took hold of his hand and Talhah hugged and helped him to stand up. Nafi' Ibn Jubair said: "I heard one of the Immigrants saying: "I took part in the battle of Uhud and saw arrows being shot from all directions while the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) remained unharmed. I also heard 'Abdullāh Ibn Shihab Az-Zubayr saying then: "Guide me to Muhammad. I will never leave him." He was saying so while the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) was alone beside him; he passed by him without seeing him. When Safwān blamed him for that, he said: "I haven't seen him. I am sure that he is in protection. Four fighters pledged one another to kill him but they got nowhere."
