*THE BATTLE OF UHUD continues*
*MOBILISING THE MECCAN ARMY*
Polytheists divided their army into rows. Abu Sufyān was the supreme commander and he centred at the heart of the army. The right wing of the army was under the command of Khālid Ibnul-Walīd. 'Ikrimah Ibn Abu Jahl was responsible for the left wing. Safwān Ibn Umayya commanded the infantrymen. The bowmen were under the command of 'Abdullāh Ibn Abu Rabī'ah. The flag lied in the responsibility of a platoon of Banu 'Abdud-Dār according to the traditions they inherited from their ancestors. To provoke their anger and fervour Abu Sufyān, the supreme commander, reminded them of their defeat they sustained on the day of Badr saying: "O sons of 'Abdud-Dār, you took responsibility of the flag on the day of Badr and we sustained a sweeping defeat then. The army can be attacked through their flag. If it disappeared, they would also perish. So take full charge of it, or else we can manage."
Abu Sufyān succeeded in his aim; Banu 'Abdud-Dār flew into rage and insisted on fighting Muslims. They also said to Abu Sufyān: "Do you want us to hand you our flag? You will see what we will do tomorrow." They already showed considerable bravery at the battlefield till they were killed.
QURAISH MAKE SOME POLITICAL MANOEUVRES
Before the battle broke out, Quraish tried to sow dissension among the ranks of the Muslims. Abu Sufyān sent a message to the Supporters in which he said: "If you leave our cousin to us, we will quit fighting you; for we have no desire for your war." But the Supporters replied to him in a harsh and fiery way. Shortly before the zero hour, Quraish made another attempt; they sent to the Supporters a perfidious agent called Abu 'Amir the Debauchee (he was 'Amr Ibn Saifiyy). The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) termed him 'the Debauchee.' He was the chief of Al-Aws before Islam. When Islam appeared in Madīnah, he resented it and revealed his animosity against the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). He got out of Madīnah and went to Quraish to instigate them against the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and promised them that his people would obey him. So he was the first one who joined the Habshis and Meccans to fight Muslims. When he recognised his people, he called out: "O community of Al-Aws! I am Abu 'Amir." They replied: "May Allāh displease you, you debauchee." He said: "My people deviated after I left them." When fight broke out, he fought them so fiercely and hurled stones at them. Quraish also failed in their second attempt. This evidenced that they were overcome by fear despite their large numbers and military superiority.
THE WOMEN OF QURAISH AROUSE THE INTEREST AND ZEAL OF THE FIGHTERS
Some women of Quraish contributed to the battle, at their forefront was Hend bint 'Utba. They were wandering around the ranks and hitting tambourines to embolden men and encourage them to fight bravely. They said to the people responsible for the flag: "Excellent, sons of 'Abdud-Dār. Excellent, protectors of our backs. Strike the enemy with sharp swords." They also encouraged their tribe to fight saying: "If you confront the enemy, we will continue to live with you (as wives) and spread out cushions. But if you retreat, we will desert you out of abhorrence and dislike."
THE FIRST FUEL OF THE BATTLE
The two armies approached each other and fight erupted. The first man to be killed in the battle was Talha Ibn Abu Talhah Al-Abdary who was among the bravest cavalrymen of Quraish. He broke into the battlefield mounting a camel, holding the flag and asking for fight. When Az-Zubayr saw him, he attacked him so courageously, rode behind him on his camel, knocked him down and then beheaded him. When the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) saw this heroic scene, he glorified Allāh (saying, Allāh is the Greatest) and praised Az-Zubayr. He said about him: "Each Prophet had a disciple and mine is Az-Zubayr."
