*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*THE ARMY OF MADĪNAH ARE IN DIFFICULT SITUATION*
While the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) was on his way in the wadi of Dhafīrān, he got information on the caravan and Quraish's army. After considering the information, he made sure that they could not avoid the bloody confrontation with the Meccan army. It was undoubted that if the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) let the Meccan army stay at this area, this would enhance Quraish's military position and expand its political sway across Arabia and then undermine Muslim's position. Moreover, this might convert the calling of Islam into a spiritless body and make it easy prey to all those who hold a grudge against and abhor Islam.
THE CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL
Because of the unexpected dangerous developments, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) held a high military consultative council in which the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) exchange views and proposals with the fighters and commanders of the army. Some Muslims feared the confrontation and became shaky. Allāh says:
Surah Al-Anfal, Verses 5-6:
كَمَا أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِّنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَارِهُونَ
As your Lord caused you (O Muhammad [Blessings and Peace be upon him]) to go out from your home with the truth, and verily, a party among the believers disliked it;
يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ بَعْدَمَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
Disputing with you concerning the truth after it was made manifest, as if they were being driven to death, while they were looking (at it).
As for the commanders of the army, Abu Bakr and 'Umar Ibnul-Khattāb expressed their consent to fight and talked favourably and enthusiastically. Then Al-Miqdād Ibn'Amr rose up and said: "O Allāh's Messenger! Go ahead with what Allāh commanded you to do. We will never abandon you. By Allāh, we do not say as the Jews said to Moses:
Surah Al-Maeda, Verse 24:
They said: "O Musa (Moses)! We shall never enter it as long as they are there. So go you and your Lord and fight you two, we are sitting right here."
But we say: "Go, your Lord, for we are fighting with you both." By the One who really sent you as a Prophet, if you lead us with you towards Bakul-Ghimād (a place in Yemen or Southern Mecca), we will try hard with you to reach it." So the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) praised him and wished him well. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) turned to the Supporters and liked to listen to their view as they comprised the majority of the army. This was despite the fact that the articles of Al-'Aqaba agreement did not bind them to fight outside Madīnah. After the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) listened to the opinions of the three commanders, he said: "Give me some advice, O people." He meant the supporters and this was what their commander Sa'ad Ibn Mu'ādh understood. He said: "It seems that you mean us, Allāh's Messenger." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Yes." Mu'ādh said: "We believed in you, testified that what you brought was right and covenanted you to obey and comply with you. Go forward to accomplish what you wish, Allāh's Messenger. By the One who sent you with truth, if you wanted us to traverse that sea, we would made into it with you. None of us will lag behind. We would like to face our enemy as soon as possible. We are very steadfast at war and sincere when fighting. May Allāh show you what we will delight you with. Let's go ahead, with Allāh's blessing."
There is another narration in which Sa'ad said to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him): "You may fear that the supporters shouldn't support you except in their own country. But I speak on their behalf. So go wherever you like, keep ties with whom you wish and break off relations with whom you like. Take of our wealth what you want and give us what you like. But what you take from us is better for us than what you leave. We promise to comply with your orders. By Allāh if you move forward towards Ghimdān (a structure in Yemen), we will march with you. If you want us to traverse this sea, we will wade into it with you as well.
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) got pleased at the stance of Sa'ad: "Proceed forth and receive the good tidings that Allāh pledged me either of the two best results. By Allāh, I can see the spots where our enemies will be killed at the moment."
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur'an 51:55)
