*Part 86*
*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*THE MECCAN ARMY PROCEED TOWARDS THE BATTLEFIELD AND SPLITS CREEP INTO THEM*
Quraish spent their night at their camp on the farther side of the valley. In the morning the army marched and descended from the dune headed towards the valley of Badr. Then a group of Quraish's fighters went to the Prophet's basin. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace upon him) ordered his followers to let them advance. All those who drank of the basin were killed except for Hakim Ibn Hizām, who afterwards, embraced Islam and adhered to it devotedly. It is reported that whenever Hakim wanted to take a solemn oath, he would say: "By the One who salvage me on the Day of Badr.
Quraish sent 'Umair Ibn Wahb Al-Jumahy to discover the military capabilities of Muslims. He mounted his horse and turned around the Muslims then he returned and said: "They are nearly three hundred warriors. But give me some time to discover if they lie in ambush or receive reinforcements." He rode his horse and went away through the valley. But he saw nothing and returned. He said: "I have seen nothing. O community of Quraish! Misfortunes trigger deaths. The young men of Yathrib yearn for heroic death. They have no recourse but the sword. They are intent to kill you as you are. If they kill a number of you, how can life be like then? I propose that you should agree to a single position."
A group of the Meccans objected to Abu Jahl and wanted to return their army to Mecca without fight. Hakim Ibn Hizām addressed people and said to 'Utba Ibn Rabī'ah: "O Abul-Walid! You're a respectable leader in Quraish. Will you do something commendable and memorable for you?" He asked: "What can I do?" He said: "You should return with your fighters and take responsibility of your ally 'Amr Ibnul-Hadramy (who was killed in the expedition of Nakhlah). 'Utba said: "I agree to do so. You can ensure that I will do that. He was an ally of mine. So I will afford his blood money and what was lost of his property." Then 'Utba said to Hakim Ibn Hizām: "Go to the son of Al-Hanzaliyyah (Abu Jahl), for I fear that he may cause discord among the fighters." He hurried up and addressed people: "O community of Quraish! If you confront Muhammad and his followers, you will get nowhere. If you should kill him, you will detest one another as it will be said that have you killed your cousin or fellow tribesman. Go back and leave Muhammad to all Arabs. If they killed him, this would be what you aspired to. If not, he will at least desist fighting you."
Hakim Ibn Hizām, while preparing an armour for himself, went to Abu Jahl and said: "Abul-Hakam, 'Utba sent me with such a message." Abu Jahl replied: "He seemed to be scared when seeing Muhammad and his followers. I won't go back till Allāh adjudicates between us and Muhammad. Let 'Utba say what he likes. He merely knew that Muhammad and his followers, including his son (Abu Huzaifah Ibn 'Utba who embraced Islam and immigrated to Madīnah) eat camel meat. So he feared that you might kill his son."
When 'Utba heard of the words of Abu Jahl: "He seemed to be scared", he said: "This person who breaks wind all the time will know which of us is scared." Suddenly and quickly Abu Jahl, for fear that dissent should increase, sent for 'Amir Ibnul-Hadramy, the brother of 'Amr Ibnul-Hadramy who was killed in the company of 'Abdullāh Ibn Jahsh and said to him: 'Utba wants to return with the army. You now can avenge the murder of your brother. Go ahead and fulfill your pledge and fight those who killed your brother." 'Amir rose and exposed his posterior and shouted: "What a pity for 'Amr! This made the fighters of Mecca enthused with fight and highly motivated to confront the Muslims. He also managed to dissuade the army from listening to the opinion of 'Utba. Thus impetuosity overcame wisdom and 'Utba's dissent went nowhere.
THE TWO ARMIES APPEAR TO EACH OTHER
When polytheists appeared and the armies saw each other, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "O Allāh! There came Quraish with their arrogance and property to defy You and disbelieve Your Messenger. O Allāh! I beg You of the victory You promised me. O Allāh! Destroy them this morning." He also said, when he saw 'Utba Ibn Rabī'ah mounting his red camel: "If there is someone wise among those people, he will be the one who is riding the red camel over there. If they (Quraish) obey him, they will be set right."
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) began to straighten up the ranks of Muslim fighters. While doing so, something wonderful happened. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) was holding a shaft in his hand with which he was straightening the ranks. Sawād Ibn Ghāziyya, one of the Muslim fighters, jutted out of the row. So the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) struck him with the shaft and said: "Straighten up yourself, Sawād." Sawād said: "O Allah's Messenger! You made me feel pain. Let me hit you back." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) uncovered his belly and said: "Hit me back." But Sawād embraced him and kissed his belly instead. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked him: "Why did you that?" He said: "O Allah's Messenger! Fight will began right now. So I wished to touch your skin so that this might be the last thing I did regarding you." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) wished him well.
After the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) straightened up the ranks, he ordered the army not to begin fighting till he issues his final orders. He gave them a special directive concerning fight by saying: "If the enemy approach you, shoot arrows at them and do not draw your swords before they engage you." Then he returned to his booth with Abu Bakr under the protection of the escort detachment commanded by Sa'ad Ibn Mu'ādh.
On his side Abu Jahl supplicated on that day and said: "O Allāh! He (Muhammad) caused us to sever relations with kith and kin and brought forward what we don't know. Destroy him this morning. O Allāh! Grant victory to whom You like and get pleased with best." In this respect Allāh says:
Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 19:
(O disbelievers) if you ask for a judgement, now has the judgement come unto you and if you cease (to do wrong), it will be better for you, and if you return (to the attack), so shall We return, and your forces will be of no avail to you, however numerous it be, and verily, Allah is with the believers.
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur'an 51:55)
