*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*MECCANS GET READY FOR FIGHT*
Quraish prepared themselves rapidly and said: "Do Muhammad and his followers regard it as the caravan of Ibnul-Hadramy? No, he will know something else." They mobilised almost all their men. Even one who couldn't come out sent a man on his behalf. Lahab was the only notable that did not take part in the fight. But he sent a man who owed him some money in place of him. They collected fighters from the neighbouring tribes except for Banu 'Adeyy who didn't move out.
The Meccan army consisted of nearly one thousand and three hundred fighters in the beginning of their match. They had one hundred horses, six hundred armours and a large number of camels. The supreme commander was Abu Jahl Ibn Hishām. Nine of the notables of Quraish equipped this army.
THE PROBLEM OF TRIBES OF BANU BAKR
When the army decided to march, Quraish remembered their hostilities with Banu Bakr and feared that they should assault their rear lines. This could make them retreat but the Satan appeared to them in the form of Surāqa Ibn Mālik Ibn Gush'um, the master of Kināna and said: "I guarantee that Kināna will not attack your rear lines.
THE ARMY OF MECCA MARCH
The Meccan moved out bag and baggage in defiance against Allāh and His Messenger. Allāh says:
Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 47:
And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. and Allah is Muhitun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do.
He also says:
Surah Al-Qalam, Verse 25:
وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ
And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom).
They advanced northwards in the direction of Badr and walked through the wadi of 'Usfān, Qudaid and Al-Juhfah. Then they received a new message from Abu Jahl in which he said: "You have moved out just to protect your caravan men and property. But everything is all right. So go back."
THE CARAVAN OF QURAISH ESCAPES FROM THE GRASP OF MUSLIMS
Abu Sufyān continued following the main route but extreme caution and alert. He, therefore, intensified his exploratory activities and once he approached Badr, his caravan proceeded on till he met Ibn 'Amr and asked him about the army of Madīnah. He said: "I didn't meet any unknown to me, but I watched two riders who stayed riding camels at the hill over there. Then they watered them from a container they had and left away. Upon hearing this, Abu Sufyān went to the same place and took a sample of the dropping of the camels. Then he crumbled it and found some kernels. He concluded that it resembled the fodder of Yathrib. He returned to his caravan quickly and made it turned westward to the direction of the coast, leaving the main route that crosses Badr to their left. Thus he escaped his caravan from Madīnah's army.
MECCA'S ARMY WANT TO RETURN AND SPLITS ARISE IN IT
When Mecca's army received the message, they wanted to return. But Abu Jahl said arrogantly: "We will never go back unless we get to Badr and camp there for three days. We will then slaughter camels, offer and relish foods, drink wine and get chanteuse to sing to us, so that Arabs will hear of our march and army and thus fear us forever." In spite of Abu Jahl, Al-Akhnas Ibn Sharief advised the troops to go back. But they did not take his advice. So he returned with the clan of Zuhrah who comprised then three hundred fighters. The clan of Zuhrah appreciated highly the opinion of Al-Akhnas Ibn Sharief, so he remained respectable and notable among them. Banu Hāshim also wanted to come back but Abu Jahl prevented them.
Afterwards, the Meccan army which reached one thousand fighters carried on marching till they stopped near Badr behind a dune on the near side of the valley of Badr.
