*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*ABU JAHL KEEPS STEADFAST*
As regards the great oppressor, Abu Jahl, as he noted the signs of failure and disorder appear in the ranks of the polytheists, he wanted to resist the flood of Muslims' assaults and encourage his army, saying haughtily: "Don't let the abandonment of Surāqa disappoint you. He has made a compromise with Muhammad. Don't be dismayed by the killing of 'Utba, Shaiba and Al-Walīd. They were precipitate and unwise. By Lat and 'Uzza, I won't retreat till I have taken them captive and seen you killing them. Destroy them completely to average their misdeeds."
Quickly his haughtiness melted away and his ranks began to split against the Muslims' ruthless attacks. Although a band of polytheists encircled him as a hedge of swords and lances, Muslims' crushing assaults destroyed it entirely. Thereupon such an oppressor kept wandering about on his horse and death waited for him at the hands of two young boys of the Supporters.
ABU JAHL MEETS HIS DEATH
'Abdur-Rahmān Ibn 'Auf reported: "While I was standing in the row on the day (of the battle) of Badr, I looked to my right and left and saw two young boys of the supporters, and I wished I had been stronger than them. One of them called my attention saying: "O uncle! Do you know Abu Jahl?" I said: "Yes, what do you want from him, my nephew?" He said: "I have been informed that he abused Allāh's Messenger. By Him who controls my life, if I should see him, then I will not leave him till either of us meets his death." I was astonished at that talk. Then the other boy called my attention saying the same as the other had said. After a while I saw Abu Jahl walking amongst the people. I said (to the boys), "Look! This is the man you asked me an." So, both of them attacked him with their swords and struck him to death and returned to Allāh's Messenger to inform him of that. Allāh's Messenger (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked: "Which of you has killed him?" Each of them said: "I have killed him." Allāh's Messenger (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked: "Have you cleaned your swords?" They said, "No." He then looked at their swords and said: "No doubt, you both have killed him and the spoils of the deceased will be given to Mu'ādh Ibn'Amr Ibn Al-Jumuh." The two boys were Mu'awwidh Ibn Mu'ādh Ibn 'Amr Ibn Jamuh."
Ibn Is'hāq said: "Mu'ādh Ibn 'Amr Ibn Al-Jamuh reported: "I heard the polytheists saying while protecting Abu Jahl with their swords and lances as though they were a thicket." Abul-Hakam is inexpugnable." When I heard this, I insisted to kill him. So I attacked him and struck him in his leg till I cut off half his shank. I likened his leg when it was cut off to a kernel that is crushed by a stone. He added: "Then his son 'Ikrimah struck me with the sword in my shoulder and chopped off my hand. It hung on to a piece of skin through my side. So I couldn't fight him back. However, I have combated all that day while I was dragging it behind me. When I felt pain in it, I pressed on it strongly till I cast it off. In the meantime Mu'awwidh Ibn 'Afrāa passed by Abu Jahl while he cast seriously wounded, struck him with the sword and finished him off. But he left him in his last breaths. As far as Mu'awwidh was concerned, he carried on fight till he was killed.
When the battle ended, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Who can examine what happened to Abu Jahl?" People rose up to look for him, including 'Abdullāh Ibn Mas'ūd who found him in his last breaths. Thereupon he put his foot on his neck and grasped him by the beard to dislodge his head. He asked him: "Did Allāh inflict shame on you, you foe of Allāh?" He said: "By what thing did He disgrace me? Is it shameful that my tribesmen killed me?" I think it is normal and reputable. I wish a person other than the plowman had kill me." Then he asked 'Abdullāh: "To whom does victory belong today?" He replied: "To Allāh and His Messenger." Then he said to Ibn Mas'ūd: "You have attained an enviable position, you unimportant shepherd." After this talk, Ibn Mas'ūd separated his head from his body, brought it to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and said: "O Allāh's peace! This is the head of Abu Jahl." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said thrice: "There is no god but Allāh." Then he said: "Allāh is the Greatest. Praise is due to Allāh who fulfilled His promise, endowed victory upon His servant and inflicted defeat upon the confederates alone. Please, let's go and show him to me." We went and I showed him to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him), whereupon he said: "This is the Pharaoh of this community."
