*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*COUNTERATTACK*
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) commanded his army to begin the counterattack and said: "Escalate your attacks." He exhorted them to fight, saying: "By the One who controls my soul, any one who, today, fights the enemy patiently and bravely and in anticipation of Allāh's reward will be entered by Allāh into Paradise. Hurry to a Paradise that occupies the heavens and earth in width." Thereupon 'Umair Ibnul-Humain said: "Excellent! Excellent! The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked him: "Why do you say that?" He said: "Nothing, Allāh's Prophet. But I hope that I will be of the dwellers of Paradise." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Surely, you will be one of its dwellers." Thereupon he ('Umair) took out some dried dates of his quiver to eat them and said: "It will be a long time till I have eaten all these dried dates." So he threw away the ones that remained with him and fought the enemy till he was martyred.
'Awf Ibnul-Hārith asked the Prophet: "What makes Allāh pleased with His servant?" He replied: "In case he strikes severely his enemy while being unarmoured." So he took off a breastplate and held his sword striking the enemy's necks violently till he was killed. When the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) issued the command to counterattack, the polytheists' attacks weakened and became less intense. So it was a judicious plan that had a great impact on enhancing the position of Muslims. Once they received the command to intensify their attacks, they began sweeping assaults on the enemy penetrating their ranks and beheading them relentlessly. The fact that they saw the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) himself advancing with his armour activated them and cheered them up. He was the closest one to the lines of the enemy. At this moment he was reciting clearly and confidently the verse reading:
Surah Al-Qamar, Verse 45:
سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ
Their multitude will be put to flight (defeated), and they will show their backs (in retreat).
Muslims showed unmatched courage at the battleground the were reinforced by the angels. Ibn Sa'ad reported 'Ikrimah as saying: "On the Day of Badr it happened that the man's head was cut off and we didn't know who struck his head. Another man's hand was cut off and we didn't know who cut it off." Ibn 'Abbās said: "While a Muslim was attacking a polytheist, he heard the sound of a whip over him and a horseman saying: "Go forward Haizum." Suddenly he saw the polytheists lying down on the ground and found out that his nose was cut off and a whip caused a slit on his face. When the Muslims went to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and related this to him, he said: "You are right. This was a reinforcement from the third heaven." Abu Dāwud Al-Mazny said: "While I was pursuing a polytheist to strike with my sword, I found that he was beheaded before my sword touched him. I realised that someone else might have killed him." Also after one of the Supporters held Al-'Abbas Ibn 'Abdul-Mutallib captive and brought him to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him), Al-'Abbas said: "This man didn't capture me. I have been captured by a bald and handsome man who was riding a piebald horse. But I can not him now. The man said: "I have captured him, Allāh's Messenger." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Be silent, it was Allāh who has backed you with a noble angel of His." 'Ali said: "Allāh's Messenger said to me and Abu Bakr on the Day of Badr: "Angel Gabriel is with one of you and Angel Michael is with the other. And angel Israfil witnesses or attends the fight."
