*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR continues*
*THE MUSLIM ARMY MARCH ON*
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) left Dhafīrān and proceeded along defiles called Al-Asāfir then descended to Ad-Dabbah, leaving to the right a huge dune called Al-Hannān. Then he camped near Badr.
THE PROPHET (Blessings and Peace be upon him) HIMSELF CARRIES OUT THE EXPLORATORY TASK
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) carried out a reconnoitring undertaking with his companions Abu Bakr. While they were wandering around the camp of Mecca, they met an Arabian old man. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked him about Quraish, Muhammad and his followers (he asked about the two armies for more secrecy). The old man said: "I will inform you provided that you tell me where you come from." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "If you tell us, we will say where we come from." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Do you want me to talk first?" The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Yes." The old man said: "I knew that Muhammad and his followers moved on such and such a day. If the person who told me was right, they should be at such and such place now. And it came to my knowledge that Quraish moved out on such and such a day. If the person who informed me was right, they would be at such and such place at the moment." Then he asked them: "Where are you from?" The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said to him: "We are from Māa. Then he left him while he was saying to himself: "What Māa? Does he mean the Māa of Iraq?"
GETTING SERIOUS INFORMATION ABOUT THE MECCAN ARMY
On the evening of the same same day the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) sent his reconnoiterers to get more information about the enemy. He assigned three commanders this task. They found two slaves who worked as the water carriers of the Meccan army. They arrested and brought them to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) while he was praying. He asked them about Quraish. They said: "We are the water carriers of Quraish. They sent us to fetch them water to drink." But they (the Prophet's Companions) belied the two servants and thought that they belonged to Abu Sufyān. They struck them severely till they said: "We belong to Abu Sufyān." After the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) finished his Prayer, he said reproachfully: "When they told the truth, you hit them and when they lied to you, you set them free. They were right as they indeed belonged to Quraish." Then the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) addressed the two slaves: "Tell me about Quraish." They said: "They are camping behind that dune you see on the farther side of the valley." He asked: How many are the fighters?" They said: "They are many." He asked: "What are their weapons?" They said: "We have no idea." He asked: "How many camels do they slaughter every day?" They said: "They slaughter ten or nine camels every day." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "They are between nine and one thousand fighters." Then he asked them: "Who are the notables of Quraish among these fighters?" They said: "'Utba and Shaiba, the two sons of Rabī'ah, Abul-Bakhtary Ibn Hāshim Ibn Hāshim, Hakim Ibn Hizām, Nawfal Ibn Khuwailid, al-Hārith Ibn'Amir, Tu'aima Ibn 'Adeyy, An-Nadr Ibnul-Hārith, Zam'ah Ibnul-Aswad, Abu Jahl Ibn Hishām and Umayya Ibn Khalaff." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) turned to his followers and said: "Mecca has brought its eminent people to you."
RAIN FALLS DOWN
On this very night Allāh brought down rains. They fell upon polytheists in the form of a downpour that hindered their advance while they fell down upon Muslims in the form of light rains that stiffened sand, leveled the ground and paved the way and brought tranquility to their hearts.
