*THE HAPPIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD*
(A TREASURE CHEST OF REMINDERS)
Episode 55
*SHE ADHERED TO THE COMMANDS OF ALLĀH AND ALLĀH PROTECTED HER*
"The night is darkest just before the dawn."
The story is told of a beautiful and wealthy woman who lingered in her house with her slaves and did not flee when the Crusaders attacked Alexandria. The Franks entered her house with drawn swords in their hands, and one of them said to her, "Where is the money?"
She said, terrified: "The money is in these trunks in this room," and she pointed towards the trunks which were in the room where she was sitting. She started to tremble with fear. One of them said, "Do not be afraid, for you will be with me, and you will enjoy my wealth and my kindness." She understood that he liked her and wanted her for himself. So she leaned towards him and said, "I want to go to the lavatory," and she spoke to him softly and kindly.
He thought that she also wanted him, so he gestured to her that she should go and relieve herself, so she went away and they started to take the trunks away. The woman went out of her house into a storeroom filled with straw, and buried herself in it. The Franks looked for her, after plundering her house, but they could not find her, so they carried away the plunder and left. The woman managed to escape being taken prisoner by means of this trick, and her slaves also managed to escape capture by hiding on the roof of the house.
The woman said: "Saving my religious commitment and honour is better than wealth and jewels which are kept by chivalrous men for only such a purpose (i.e to ensure the soundness of their religious commitment and honour), because being poor is better than being a prisoner and compelled to change one's religion by force."
"You have to accept the inescapable fact, which is that you will encounter things in life that you cannot change, but you can deal with through patience and faith."
