During the conquest of Makkah, Khālid Ibn al-Walīd (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) emerged as one of the commandants of the Muslim Army and the broader Muslim community. Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) stood at a point reminiscing about his childhood and youthful memories. These reflections weighed heavily on him, filling him with remorse for the years he had devoted to worshipping lifeless and powerless idols.
However, before succumbing to regret, Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) was uplifted by the monumental joy that was approaching Makkah, eclipsing everything in its path. He lifted his gaze, filled with reverence, ecstasy, and satisfaction, as the flag of Islām waved on the horizon. It was narrated that he remarked to himself: “Indeed, it is a Promise of Allāh and He fails not in His Promise.” Overwhelmed with gratitude, Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) thanked Allāh for guiding him to Islām and allowing him to be among those who would bring Islām into Makkah. Following the conquest, Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) remained close to the Prophet (ﷺ).
Furthermore, Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) devoted his life and remarkable talents to the service of the faith he firmly embraced. After the passing of the Prophet (ﷺ), when Abū Bakr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) assumed leadership of the believers, a turbulent wave of apostasy threatened to engulf Islām. In response, Abū Bakr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) swiftly appointed Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) to confront them.
While Abū Bakr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) led the first army against the apostates, he strategically kept Khālid (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) in reserve for the decisive confrontation. He divided the army into eleven divisions, assigning specific tasks to each. Khālid Ibn al-Walīd (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) was designated as the commander of a significant division. As Abū Bakr (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) distributed flags to each commander, he addressed Khālid, saying… To be continued in the next episode, Allāh willing.
I beseech Allāh to be Especially Merciful to Khālid Ibn al-Walīd. Aameen.
