FAJR REMINDER: ABOUT IFṬĀR AND SAḤŪR

O Muslims! Let's distinguish our fasting from that of non-Muslims, particularly the People of the Book, by taking Saḥūr (the pre-fasting meal) during the final part of the night. It is not a sign of Taqwā to claim that one can fast without it or to deem those who consume it as weak. ‘Amr Ibn Al-Aas (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) stated: “The difference between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is eating Saḥūr.” [Ṣaḥiḥ Muslim 1096]
Neglecting Saḥūr is an act of disobedience to the Prophet (ﷺ). Anas Ibn Mālik (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Take the pre-fasting meal, for surely there are blessings in the pre-fasting meal.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1923, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1095]
While some may experience stomach discomfort after eating the pre-fasting meal, it remains important to partake in it—even if it’s merely a sip of water, as it should be taken with the intention of Saḥūr. Abū Sa’īd al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said, “The pre-fasting meal is a blessed meal, so do not abandon it even if you only take a sip of water. Verily, Allāh and His angels send blessings upon those who partake in the pre-fasting meal.” [Musnad Aḥmad 11086]
These Aḥadīth clearly indicate that consuming Saḥūr is highly recommended. Why would you forgo this blessed meal? It carries great rewards, facilitates the observance of the Fajr prayer, and provides the strength needed for various acts of worship, especially during fasting.
Moreover, it is crucial to delay the intake of Saḥūr until the last part of the night, just before Fajr. Anas Ibn Mālik (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) relayed that Zayd Ibn Thābit (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) mentioned: “We ate Saḥūr with Allāh’s Messenger (ﷺ) and then he stood for prayer. Anas asked Zayd, ‘How much time was there between the Adhān and Saḥūr?’ He replied: Enough time to recite fifty verses.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1921, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1097]
Regarding breaking the fast, this should be done promptly with dates or a sip of water as soon as the sun sets. Sahl Ibn Sa’d (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “People will continue in goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast.” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1957, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1098]
I beseech Allāh to make us His obedient slaves. Aameen.
