FAJR REMINDER: ARE YOU READY?
By: Umm Affān
Sha'bān 29, 1447 (17-February-2026)
We (in Nigeria) may begin fasting tomorrow if we sight the crescent tonight. However, if it isn't sighted, tomorrow will mark the 30th of Sha'bān, and Thursday, February 19, 2026, will automatically be the first day of Ramaḍān 1447. Is there anything unclear about this?
Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramaḍān) observe fast, and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwāl) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1081] We seek Allāh’s Aid against ignorance and self-desire.
Dear brethren! Regardless of whether Ramaḍān begins on Wednesday, or Thursday, are you prepared for it? Are you still considering making Tawbah (repentance) to Allāh? Have you overcome your bad habits? I hope you aren't starting Ramaḍān with transgressions. Sincere Tawbah elevates one’s status and leads to Allāh's Grace in this life and the Hereafter.
Furthermore, have you reconciled with those with whom you have issues? Wouldn’t you want to enter this sacred month with a pure heart and a peaceful mind? It’s not too late. Consider giving to the poor and needy; do some of this now and even more when the month begins. The world can only improve if we support one another.
Remember, fasting encompasses more than just refraining from food, drink, or sexual relations. We must also avoid anger (i.e., exercise patience on issues) and refrain from worthless and sinful behaviors, such as backbiting, gossiping, and slandering. So, are you ready for Ramaḍān?
I beseech Allāh to allow us to reach Ramaḍān and accept all our acts of worship during it. Aameen.
