*THE FINAL DEPUTATION OF ABU TĀLIB*
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) got out of the gulch where he spent the period of the siege and proceed with his mission. But Quraish continued to exert its pressures on Muslims and oppose the Islamic calling by all means. While Abu Tālib, who exceed eighty years of age, continued protecting the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). Misfortunes, especially, the siege, and the consecutive pains weakened and exhausted him greatly. Few months after the blockade he began to suffer from illness. Polytheists feared that they disgrace themselves by harming the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) after the demise of his uncle. So they tried to negotiate with the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) in the presence of his uncle and make more concessions for the last time.
Ibn Is'hāq said: "When Abu Tālib fell ill and his condition worsened, Quraishites said to one another: "Hamzah and 'Umar have converted to Islam. The calling of Muhammad became prevalent among all the tribes of Quraish. So go to Abu Tālib and ask him to stop his nephew and make our final offers to him. We don't ensure that they can overcome us." In another narration: "We fear that this old man should die and Arabs taunt us with a shameful act. They may say: "They left him (Muhammad) alone, but when his uncle died, they attacked him."
The notables and leaders of Quraish went to Abu Tālib and said to him: "Abu Tālib, you belong to us. You became ill and weak and we are afraid for you. You know the difference between your nephew and us. Send to him and adjudicate between us. We will restrain ourselves from him and let him adhere to his religion but at the same time we want him to leave us alone and allow us to stick to our own religion." Abu Tālib sent for the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). When he came, he said: "My nephew, the notables of your people came to me to negotiate with you." Then he told him that they suggested that each party shouldn't oppose the other as to their beliefs and religions. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) replied to their proposals by saying: "Will I inform you of a word that if you say, you will have control over other Arabs and non-Arabs?" In another narration the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said to his uncle: "I want them to say one word by which all Arabs can submit to them and non-Arabs will pay them the tribute." In another version: "O my uncle! Will I invite them to what's is better?" He asked: "What will you invite them to?" He said: "I call them upon to say a single word through which all Arabs yield to them and they take control of non-Arabs."
When they these words, they hesitated and became bewildered. They did not know how to refuse such a beneficial and significant word. Then Abu Jahl asked: "What's this word? I swear to say it tenfold before you." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "To say, 'There is no god but Allāh' and abandon what you worship besides Him." They clapped their hands in astonishment and said: "Do you want to regard these gods as only one, Muhammad? Indeed, you are strange." They said to one another: "This man will not give you anything you wish. So go on with the religion of your forefathers till Allāh judges between Him and us." At last they went away. On them Allāh says:
Surah Sad, Verse 1-7:
Sad [These letters (Sad etc.) are one of the miracles of the Qur-ān and none but Allāh (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the Qur-ān full of reminding.
Nay, those who disbelieve are in false pride and opposition.
How many a generation We have destroyed before them, and they cried out when there was no longer time for escape!
And they (Arab pagans) wonder that a warner (Prophet Muhammad [Blessings and Peace be upon him]) has come to them from among themselves! And the disbelievers say: "This (Prophet Muhammad [Blessings and Peace be upon him]) is a sorcerer, a liar.
"Has he made the aliha (gods) (all) into One Ilah (God - Allāh). Verily, this is a curious thing!"
And the leaders among them went about (saying): "Go on, and remain constant to your aliha (gods)! Verily, This is a thing designed (against you)!
"We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention!
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur'an 51:55)
