In surah al-Ma'idah, Allah says:
*O People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you, making much of what you used to conceal of the scripture clear to you and passing over much. A light and a clear book has come to you from Allah. [15]*
In part of his commentary on this ayah, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari wrote:
Ibn 'Abbaas said: Whoever disbelieves in the punishment of stoning has disbelieved in the Qur'an in a way he did not expect. Allah says:
*"O People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you, making much of what you used to conceal of the scripture clear to you" [al-Ma'idah ayah 15]*
and stoning is part of what they concealed.
[Tafsir al-Tabari 10/142]
