*Let's Change Our Mindsets About Marriage*
*Episode 28*
*LESSON FROM UMAR IBN KHATTAB*
Umar Ibn Khattab is a very popular Sahabi (Companion of the Prophet) and was the second Khalifa after Abubakar Saddiq. Umar did a very courageous thing that is worth sharing with you today. Umar had a daughter called Hafsa. Hafsa was married once to a Sahabi who died a sudden death. So Hafsa remained a widow for a long time. However, Umar felt she was too young (18) and needed a husband. So Umar went from one sahaba to another asking them to consider marrying Hafsa. And he did that based on the fact that he trusted these men and felt they are worthy of his daughter. But none of them accepted his offer including Uthman and Abubakar. Later Umar went to the Messenger to complain, then the Messenger gave him the news of his interest in Hafsa. And later Hafsa was married to the Messenger of Allah.
Lesson derived from this story.
1. The first lesson derived here is the fact that is not bad or embarrassing if as a father or mother or brother; you find a good man and ask him to marry your daughter or sister.
2. That it is a sign of a responsible guardian (parent) to refuse to allow girl-child to live at home without marriage.
3. That if we are to do the same to our sisters today; who are either old enough to get married or are divorced, probably we will help cut down the rate of unmarried women in our society as well as the frequent occurrence of zina (adultery or fornication).
4. The next heroic thing to do is after finding her a suitor, you cut down all unnecessary spendings and reject all form of unislamic things that happen in marriages. Through this means, Allah will put barakah (Blessings) in the marriage and they live happily thereafter.
Let us learn something from the life of Umar. It is not easy indeed to go house to house asking for people to marry your daughter, as some people would think negative of you. Nevertheless, if you purify your heart, Allah will surely save you from embarrassment in the day of judgement. And you have saved your daughter from illicit relationships and unwanted pregnancies and so on.
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur-ān 51:55)
