*Let's Change Our Mindsets About Marriage*
*Episode 29*
*CAN A WOMAN OR MAN SAY NO?*
I was reading the history of Zaynab Bint Jahsh, one from among the wives of the messenger of Allah. I came across a point where in the beginning of her teenage life, the messenger sent a messenger (companion) to her with a proposal. That she should marry Zaid Ibn Hārithah. But Zaynab quickly turned it down and said this man is not my taste. And the messenger of Allah never bothered her again with the request until later when Allah sent down revelation asking the believing men and women not to turn down a request from the messenger. This tells you that when it comes to marriage, a woman or man has the right to reject the proposal from their parents for their own piece of mind. However it is not disrespectful in any way, and Allah will not punish the child for rejecting the offer. That brings me to a point where I say it is not befitting for the parents to force their children after the children have shown dismay about the proposal.
