Question asked is,
Is performing ghusl on Friday sunnah or fard?
Alhamdulillah, taking a bath on friday is Sunnah as the messenger of Allah salla Allahu alayhi wasalam used to take ghusl on every Fridays and doing so as a reward when one goes to the Friday prayer.
As reported in hadith,
It was narrated that Samurah said:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever performs wudu' on Friday, that is all well and good, but whoever performs ghusl, the ghusl is better.'"'"
Sunan an Nasa'i
Book 14, Hadith 17.
Abu Al-Ash'ath narrated that:
He heard Aws bin Aws, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever performs Ghusl on Friday and washes (ghassala), and comes early to the masjid walking not riding, and sits close to the imam and listens attentively and does not engage in idle speech, for every step he takes he will have (the reward of) a year's worth of good deeds.'"
Sunan an Nasa'i.
Book 14, Hadith 21.
Aisha reported:
The people (mostly) were workers and they had no servants. Ill-smell thus emitted out of them. It was saidto them: Were you to take bath on Friday.
Sahih Muslim 847 b.
The reason Ghusl was made obligatory on some people are those who do work and the prophet said to them to take bath to cleanse the odour and come to the jumu'ah prayer.
As hadith says,
Aisha reported:
The people came for Jumu'a prayer from their houses in the neighbouring villages dressed in woollen garments on whichdust was settled and this emitted a foul smell. A person among them (those who were dressed so) came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was in my house. The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said to him: Were you to cleanse yourselves on this day.
Sahih Muslim 847.
