If you perceive keeping a beard as unsociable or believe it makes you unattractive, consider the example of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)—a paragon of creation, defined by his exceptional beauty, captivating appearance, and a remarkably radiant face, all complemented by a thick, full beard.
Moreover, our numerous pious predecessors throughout history, who also sported beards, upheld this practice. It's important not to misunderstand the significance here: maintaining a beard is a Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) and, by extension, an integral part of Islām. He (ﷺ) strongly instructed: “Act against (i.e., contrary to) the polytheists, trim closely the moustache and grow the beard.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 259] So, why hesitate to keep your beard? Recall the Words of Allāh: “O you who believe! Obey Allāh and His Messenger and turn not away from him (i.e. Muḥammad ﷺ) while you are hearing. And be not like those who say: ‘We have heard,’ but they hear not.” [Sūrah Al-Anfāl (8): 20-21]
To Muslim men who shave their beards: what holds you back from growing one? A beard not only enhances a man’s attractiveness but also serves as a clear indicator of masculinity. Additionally, several health benefits are associated with maintaining a beard, particularly a full and thick one. These include blocking nearly 95 percent of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which can lead to skin cancer and acne flare-ups; preventing airborne bacteria from entering the mouth and thus protecting the throat and lungs; reducing the risk of bacterial infections; saving time otherwise spent shaving; and even enhancing one's sex life—evidence suggests that facial hair signals sexual maturity and conveys a strong socio-sexual message.
Ultimately, true success lies in obeying Allāh and His Messenger.
I beseech Allāh to enable us to be His sincere and devoted servants. Aameen.
