Is it not damaging to harbor ill thoughts about your brother? Exercise caution against suspicion, for nothing brings joy and eases the heart quite like maintaining a positive view of others. This practice shields one from negative thoughts that can disturb the heart and wear down the mind. Allāh cautions: “O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). Fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.” [Sūrah Al-Ḥujrāt (49): 12]
Keep in mind that thinking positively about others fosters a sound heart, strengthens relationships, and encourages love among people. Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) stated: “Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; and do not look for the others' faults and do not spy, and do not be jealous of one another, and do not desert (cut your relation with) one another, and do not hate one another; and O Allāh's worshipers! Be brothers (as Allah has ordered you!)” [Ṣaḥiḥ al-Bukhārī 6064]
It is vital to refrain from negatively interpreting what your brother says, provided you can find a good rationale for his words. If someone says or does something that disturbs or upsets you, make an effort to excuse the individual’s behavior. Manāzil remarked: “A believer seeks excuses for his brother, whilst the hypocrite seeks mistakes.” [Al-Jāmi‘ li Shu‘ab Al-Īmān 7/9059]
By making excuses for the actions and words of others, you will alleviate the burden of assumptions and avoid overly blaming others.
I beseech Allāh to rectify our affairs. Aameen.
