*CALAMITIES ARE MEANS OF ATTAINING DESIRES*
*"But whosoever turns away from My remembrance (i.e neither believe in this Qur'an nor acts on its teachings) verily, for him is a life of hardship..."* [Qur'an 20:124]
It is narrated that Umm al-'Alā' (may Allāh be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allāh (Blessings and Peace be upon him) visited me when I was sick and said: 'Be of good cheer, O' Umm al-'Alā', for by means of a Muslim's sickness Allāh takes away his sin as the fire take away the dross of silver.'"
This does not mean that we should breed germs in our bodies or be careless about seeking medical treatment on the basis that sickness erases sin. Rather, we should seek healing and cure, whilst still bearing the sickness with patience and seeking reward for the pain from Allāh. We should regard it as a means of storing up good deeds on our record. This is the lesson that this righteous woman is teaching us.
Women should bear with patience the loss of beloved ones such as their husbands and children. In the hadīth it says: "Allāh will not be pleased to give his believing slave any reward less than Paradise, if a dear one among the people of the world is is taken from him and he accepts that with patience and seeks reward from Allāh."
If a woman loses her husband, it means that Allāh has taken back His slave, and He is more entitled to that. If the woman says, "My husband!" or "My son!" the creator says, "My slave, and I have more right to him than anyone else." A husband is a loan, a child is a loan, a brother is a loan, a father is a loan, a wife is a loan.
