When Friends Break Up
By Yasir Qadhi
Anas b. Mālik reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Never do two friends who were together for the sake of Allah, or in Islam, break up except because of a sin that one of them did" [Reported by al-Bukhārī in his Adab al-Mufrad].
In this amazing hadith, we learn:
- sins affect all aspects of our life. Some of the sages of the past remarked, "Sometimes I commit a sin and I see the effects of that sin in how my spouse treats me." Ibn al-Qayyim lists over two dozen effects of sins in his famous work "The Disease and the Cure".
- having a friend for the sake of Allah is a great blessing, so cherish those relationships and work to maintain them. And one of the way to keep our relationships strong is by avoiding sins.
- when a friendship or relationship is affected, the first thing we need to do is introspect our own lives, and return to Allah in repentance.
- as Muslims, we realize that any pain or suffering or break-up of this nature is in fact a means of purifying our sins in this world, instead of being punished for them in the next. Not a single thorn affects us, nor any grief or worry, except that as a result of that anguish some sins are forgiven. So while we don't want any pain or anguish, when we do feel it, we expect Allah to reward and forgive us. And in that knowledge we find some comfort to help bear that pain/anguish.
We ask Allah for protection and forgiveness for our sins!
