Allah addresses the People of the Book in surah al-Ma'idah, saying:
*قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ هَلْ تَنقِمُونَ مِنَّا إِلَّا أَنْ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَمَا أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلُ وَأَنَّ أَكْثَرَكُمْ فَاسِقُونَ*
*Say: O People of the Book, do you resent us for anything other than the fact that we believe in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed previously and because most of you are wrongdoers? [59]*
Commenting on this, al-Baghawi wrote:
Ibn 'Abbaas said: A group of Jews - Abu Yasir ibn Akhtab, Rafi' ibn Abi Rafi', and others - came to the Prophet and asked him which Messengers he believed in.
The Prophet said, *"I believe in Allah and what He revealed to us and what He revealed to Ibrahim, Ismaa'eel, Ishaq, Ya'qub, the Asbat, and what was given to Moosaa and 'Eesaa and what was given to the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between the Prophets, and we are Muslims in submission to Him"* [cf al-Baqarah ayah 136].
But when he mentioned 'Eesaa they rejected his status as a prophet, saying, "By Allah, we don't know any followers of a religion with a lesser share of this life or the next than you, nor do we know of any religion worse than yours!"
So Allah revealed, *"Say: O People of the Book, do you resent us"* - i.e do you hate us - *"for anything other than the fact that we believe in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed previously and because most of you are wrongdoers?"*
i.e. do you hate us for any reason other than our faith and your wickedness? In other words: You only hate us because of our faith even while you know that we are following the truth. That is because you committing wrong by remaining on your religion simply due to your want to maintain a position of leadership and your love of wealth.
