*Part 80*
*THE GREAT BATTLE OF BADR*
*THE FIRST CRUCIAL BATTLE OF ISLAM*
THE CAUSE OF THIS BATTLE: It was previously stated that a caravan of Quraish escaped from the Prophet's grasp when it was leaving Mecca for Ash-Shām in the expedition of Dhul-'Ushairah. When the caravan was about to return from Ash-Shām, the Prophet sent out Talha Ibn 'Ubaidullah and Sa'īd Ibn Zaid to reconnoitre it. They headed towards Al-Hawrāa and stayed for a while till Abu Sufyān passed by them with the caravan. They hastened to Madīnah and informed the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) of that.
It is worth mentioning that this caravan was loaded with huge wealth belonging to the leaders and notables of Quraish; one thousand camels were loaded with goods that were worth fifty thousand golden dinars. They were under the escort of forty fighters.
It was a golden opportunity for Muslims to deal an economic fatal blow to Meccans. So the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) commanded Muslims to go fighting by saying: "Proceed towards the caravan of Quraish so that Allāh (Sub-haanahu wata'aala) may help you take it as booty."
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) didn't specify anyone to move out for fight. He left them to their choice. This was because the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) did not expect that he would collide with the army of Mecca in such a severe manner as it will be discussed later. So many Companions did not attend this battle and remained in Madīnah as they also thought that this time would be similar to the previous expeditions.
THE TROOPS OF THE MUSLIM ARMY AND DISTRIBUTING THE COMMANDS
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) got ready for setting out along with about three hundred and fourteen fighters. They did not make all the necessary arrangements for this military task. They had only two horses: one for az-Zubayr Ibnul-'Awwām and another for Al-Miqdād Ibnul-Aswad Al-Kanady. They had seventy camels, with every three men taking turns in mounting one camel. The Prophet, 'Ali and Marthad Ibn Abu Marthad were mounting one camel in turn.
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) entrusted Ibn Umm Makhtoum with the charge of Madīnah and leading people in prayer. When he reached Ar-Rawhāa, he returned Abu Lubābah and made him to be in charge of Madīnah too. He handed the white flag of general command to Mus'ab Ibn 'Umair Al-Quraishy Al-'Abdary. Then the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) divided the army into two battalions: the battalion of the Immigrants whose flag was given to 'Ali Ibn Abu Tālib and the one of the supporters whose flag was handed to Sa'ad Ibn Mu'ādh. He appointed az-Zubayr Ibnul-'Awwām as the commander of the right wing of the army while Al-Miqdād Ibn 'Amr commanded the left wing. Qais Ibn Abu Sa'as'ah was responsible for the rear lines. The supreme command was in the Prophet's hands.
