*DIVIDING THE MUSLIM ARMY INTO BATTALIONS AND THEIR MARCH TO THE BATTLEFIELD*
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) led people in Friday prayer, preached and ordered them and struggle and fight in the cause of Allāh (Sub-haanahu wata'aala). He also told them that patience brings victory and ordered them to be on full alert. Then he led Muslims in the afternoon prayer. After that Muslims rallied and all fighters were present. Then the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) entered his house with his two top Companions; Abu Bakr and 'Umar. They attired him with a turban. Then he carried his arm, wore two armours, girded himself with his sword and received the Muslims. Before he got out of his house, he said: "You have obliged the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) to march out. Change your mind now." Muslims became sorry for their act. So when the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) appeared, they said to him: "O Allāh's Messenger! We should not have contravened you. Do whatever you like. If you want to stay in Madīnah, do that." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "Any Prophet shouldn't take off his armour he had worn till Allāh has judged between him and his enemy."
THE PROPHET (Blessings and Peace be upon him) DIVIDES HIS ARMY INTO THREE DETACHMENTS
1. The detachment of the Immigrants whose flag was given to Mus'ab Ibn 'Umair Al-'Abdary.
2. The detachment of the supporters of Al-Aws whose flag was carried by Usaid Ibn Hudair.
3. The detachment of the supporters of Al-Khazrajj whose flag was held by Al-Hubāb Ibnul-Mundhir.
The army consisted of one thousand fighters, one hundred of whom had armours. There were no cavalrymen. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) ordered Ibn Umm Makhtoum to lead Muslims who remained in Madīnah in prayer. Then he announced the beginning of the march. The army marched northwards while Sa'ad Ibn Mu'ādh and Sa'ad Ibn Ubādah were moving in front of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) with their armours. When the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) passed the defile of Wadā'a, he saw a separate well-armed detachment behind his forces. He was told that they were Jewish allies for Al-Khazrajj who wanted to take part in fighting against the polytheists. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked: "Have they converted to Islam?" It was replied in the negative. So he refused to ask disbelievers to help fighting against the polytheists.
REVIEWING THE ARMY
When the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) reached a place called As-Shaikhān, he reviewed his army and let young Muslims who couldn't fight return home. Among them were 'Abdullāh Ibn 'Umar Ibnul-Khattāb, Osāma Ibn Zaid, Usaid Ibn Zuhair, Zaid Ibn Thābit, Zaid Ibn Arqam, 'Arābah Ibn Aws, 'Amr Ibn Hazm, Abu Sa'īd Al-Khudri, Zaid Ibn Hārithah Al-Ansāry, Sa'ad Ibn Habbah, and Al-Barrāa Ibn 'Azib. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) allowed some teenagers to fight with him such as Rafi' Ibn Khadij and Samurah Ibn Jundab. Rafī was skilled at shooting arrows and Samurah was stronger than Rāfī.
