*THE BATTLE OF UHUD continues*
*SPENDING THE NIGHT AT A PLACE BETWEEN UHUD AND MADĪNAH*
When the army stopped at this place, evening fell. Thereupon the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) led them in sunset prayer and spent the night there. He assigned fifty fighters to guard the camp under the command of Muhammad Ibn Maslamah. While Dhakwān Ibn 'Abd Qais was responsible for guarding the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) in personal.
THE MUTINY OF 'ABDULLĀH IBN UBAYY AND HIS FOLLOWERS
Shortly before daybreak the army continued marching till Ash-Shawt where the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) led them in dawn prayer. They were near the position of the enemy. At this moment 'Abdullāh Ibn Ubayy, the top hypocrite, and his followers mutinied against the army and withdrew nearly the third of the troops. He said: "I don't know why we should kill ourselves." He pretended to protest that the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) changed his own mind and inclined to others' views. But this was not the real reason behind his revolt. His main aim was to cause chaos and disorder among the ranks of the Muslim army before the eyes of their enemies. In this case many fighters would mutiny against their supreme commander (the Prophet) and this, in turn, might undermine the morale of the troops that would remain with the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and raise that of the enemy. This would result in the rapid elimination of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and his sincere Companions. Thereupon he ('Abdullāh Ibn Ubayy) and his wicked followers could regain their authority over Madīnah.
This mean hypocrite was about to succeed in achieving his goal. Two groups of the Muslim army (Banu Hārithah of Al-Aws and Banu Salamah of Al-Khazrajj) wanted to pull out as well. But Allāh made them steadfast and they remained in the battleground. Almighty Allāh says:
Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 122:
When two parties from among you were about to lose heart, but Allah was their Wali (Supporter and Protector). And in Allah should the believers put their trust.
'Abdullāh Ibn Harām (the father of Jābir Ibn 'Abdullāh) tried to remind those hypocrites of their duty in this very difficult situation. He reproved and urged them to return, saying: "Come to fight with us or only repel the enemy." They said to him: "If we knew that you would fight, we wouldn't retreat." He left them and said: "May Allāh keep you away, you enemies of Allāh, Allāh will help His Prophet with people other than you." Concerning such hypocrites, Almighty Allāh says:
Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 167:
And that He might test the hypocrites, it was said to them: "Come, fight in the Way of Allah or (at least) defend yourselves." They said: "Had we known that fighting will take place, we would certainly have followed you." They were that day, nearer to disbelief than to Faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allah has full knowledge of what they conceal.
THE REMAINING FORCES MARCH TOWARDS UHUD
Despite the mutiny and withdrawal of the hypocrites, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) led the rest of his troops (seven hundred fighters) towards the enemy. The polytheists deployed their forces at many positions near Uhud. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) asked: "Who can lead us to the enemy through an unknown route?" Abu Khaithamah said: "I can, Allāh's Messenger." He went to along a short route to Uhud which passed through the lava field of Banu Hārithah and their farms, leaving the army of the polytheists to the west. The army moved along this route through a garden that belonged to Merba' Ibn Qaizi (who was a blind hypocrite). When he sensed the movement of the army, he took handfuls of dust and threw them at the faces of Muslims fighters, saying: "I don't allow you to pass through my garden if you are the Messenger of Allāh (Sub-haanahu wata'aala)." The Muslims wanted to kill him but the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) refused and said: "Don't kill him, for he is blind and benighted." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) proceeded on till the army halted at a gulch near Uhud, at the slope of the valley. The army camped at this place turning their faces to Madīnah and making their backs towards the hills of Uhud. Consequently, the enemy formed a barrier between Muslims and Madīnah.
