*THE BATTLE OF AL-AHZĀB*
Peace and security returned and Arabia became quiet after an entire year of fight and military expeditions. However, the Jews who abased themselves by their treachery and conspiracies didn't stop their oppression or take warnings from their betrayal and plots. After being banished to Khaibar, they waited for a calamity that might befall Muslims as a result of the scrimmage that occurred between them and Pagans. Since Muslims changed the course of days to their benefit and imposed their authority, the Jews burnt up with intense spite and hatred against them.
Therefore, they reverted to their conspiracies against Muslims and began to brace themselves up for delivering a fatal blow to them. But they hadn't the nerve to confront Muslims directly, so they (the Jews) planned this in a horrendous manner.
A delegation of about twenty leaders of the Jews and Banu An-Nadir travelled to Mecca to incite Quraish against the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and promise to back and stand up for them at the outbreak of any new war against Muslims. Quraish consented to their desire as they viewed that fight this time would save their reputation after they had gave up fighting in the last military campaign. The same Jewish delegation went to Ghatafān and some Arabian tribes and persuaded them to fight the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him). Thus the Jews succeeded in instigating the confederates of polytheism against the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and Muslims.
As a result of the Jews' instigative attempts, Quraish, Kināna and their allies of Tuhāmah marched from the south with an army of four thousand fighters under the command of Abu Sufyān. Banu Sulaim joined them at Marr Az-Zahrān. From the eastern direction advanced the tribes of Ghatafān, Banu Fazārah under 'Uyayna Ibn Hisn, Banu Murrah under Hārith Ibn 'Awf, Banu Ashga' under Mes'ar Ibn Ruhailah in addition to the tribe of Asad and others. These huge forces headed for Madīnah and waited for an appointment they made by agreement for attacking it. After several days, an enormous army consisting of ten thousand combatants assembled at Madīnah. The number of this army outnumbered all the residents of Madīnah, including women, children and aged people.
If these military coalition reached Madīnah's fences, this would pose a real danger to the Muslims' entity and existence. But by the virtue of the ingenious and wise leadership of the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him), Muslims continued to be on full alert and awake to all possible dangers and emergent circumstances. No sooner had these armies moved out than Madīnah's intelligence reports affirmed such dangerous advance of the enemy. Consequently, the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) convened a quick consultative meeting to discuss a defensive measure against any attack on Madīnah. After the discussions had by the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and prominent Muslims, they consented to a proposal submitted by Salmān Al-Farīsy. He said: "O Allāh's Messenger! We used to dig trenches in Faris (present-day Iran) whenever we were besieged by the enemy." This was a judicious plan that was unknown to Arabs.
The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) ordered the rapid implementation of this plan. He assigned every ten men to dig forty cubits of the trench. Very actively and enthusiastically, Muslims began digging the trench. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) himself took part in the digging and encouraged them. Sahl Ibn Sa'ad was reported to have said: "We were present with the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) when Muslims were digging the trench and carrying sand on their shoulders." The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) said: "O Allāh! The truly pleasant life is that of the Hereafter. So forgive the Immigrants and Supporters." (Narrated by Al-Bukhāry)
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur-ān 51:55)
