*THE BATTLE OF AL-AHZĀB continues*
Jābir narrated: "We were digging (the trench) on the day of Al-Khandaq (the trench) and we came across a big solid rock. We went to the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) and said: "Here is a rock appearing across the trench." He said: "I am coming down." Then he got up with a stone tied to his belly for we had not eaten anything for three days. The Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) took the spade and struck the big solid rock and it became like sand."
Al-Barrā Ibn 'Azib said: "On the day of Al-Khandaq (Trench) we came across a big solid rock that spades couldn't break. We informed the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) of that. He came and took the spade, said, 'in the name of Allāh and gave one stroke to the rock. Thereupon he said: "Allāh is the Greatest. I will be given the keys of Ash-Shām. It seems as if I see its red palaces at the moment." He gave the second stroke and said: "Allāh is the Greatest. I will be given Faris. I do see the white palace of Madāen now. Then he made the third stroke that broke the rock entirely and said: "Allāh is the Greatest. I have just been given the keys of Yemen. I do see the gates of Sana'a from this place."
Because Madīnah was surrounded by volcanic and stony areas as well as mountains and gardens of palm trees from three directions (except for the north), the Prophet (Blessings and Peace be upon him) ordered that the trench should be dug along the northern direction. He expected that the enemy would assault Madīnah from this direction. Muslims carried on digging the trench. They were digging by day and returning home in the evening to spend the night with their families till they accomplished their task before the heathen huge army reached the fences of Madīnah.
*{To be continued In-sha-Allāh (If Allāh Wills)...}*
*"And keep reminding, because reminding benefits the believers."* (Qur-ān 51:55)
