Pay Your Zakatul-Fitr

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ibn ’Abbas (ra) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) enjoined Zakat ul-fitr on the one who fasts (i.e. fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakah for the person who pays it before the Eid prayer and it is Sadaqah (i.e. voluntary charity) for the person who pays it after the Eid prayer.’ 📚 (Abu Dawud)

Now,

*When should zakatul fitr be paid?*

Zakatul-Fitr is only Wajib (Compulsory) for a particular period of time.

Evidence:

Ibn Abbas reported that: “The Prophet (pbuh) made Zakatul-Fitr compulsory so that those who fasted may be purified of their idle deeds and shameful talk (committed during Ramadan) and so that the poor may be fed. Whoever gives it before Salah (Eid Prayer) will have it accepted as Zakah, while he who gives it after the Salah has given Sadaqat.” 📚[Collected by Abu Dawud

So,

If one misses the time period without a good reason, he has sinned and can not make it up. This form of charity becomes obligatory from sunset on the last day of fasting and remains obligatory until the beginning of Salatul-Eid (i.e. shortly after sunrise on the following day).

However,

It can be paid prior to the above mentioned period, as many of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet) used to pay Sadaqatul-Fitr a couple days before the Eid.

“The Prophet (pbuh) order that it (Zakatul-Fitr) be given before people go to make the Salah (of Eid).”

Nafi’u transmitted that: *“Ibn Umar used to pay Zakatul-fitr a day or two before the Eid prayer.”* 📚 [Bukhari, Muslim and Abu Dawud]

*Basic Errors Muslims are making with Zakat Al-Fitr:*

Unfortunately, our community makes some basic errors in the payment of Zakat Al-Fitr that must be clarified.

*Error No 1:* Giving money instead of food

Although some scholars have allowed giving money instead of food, but the spirit of Zakat Al-Fitr is to give food to the needy of the community, NOT money.

Muslim Faithful,

Not giving money for Zakatul-Fitr is as Sunnah at-Turkiyyah (an action, the abandonment of which is a Prophetic Sunnah). Money existed and was prevalent in the Prophet’s time but he did not nor did the Companions or Tabi’in (followers of the Companions) use any money for Zakatul-Fitr.

So,

If he (Peace be upon him) and the (Companions and Tabi’in) did not use money for Sadaqatul-Fitr why should any one else?

*Error No 2:* Not paying

Yes, as simple as this error is, it is HARAM to skip the payment of Zakat Al-Fitr. EVERYONE must pay Zakat Al-Fitr, every member of the household. So if you have 8 people in your house, Zakat Al-Fitr must be paid x 8, even if the youngest member is just a few days old.

*Error No 3:* Confusing Zakat ul-Fitr with Zakat ul-Maal

We are talking about Zakat al-Fitr here (think “Iftar”, i.e. Ramadan). Zakat Al-Maal (Maal literally means wealth), is the Zakah due on ones money – and that could be due any time during the year depending on when it was due.

To be continued...

NOTHING HAPPENS WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF ALLAH

DAILY ISLAMIC REMINDERS. Yawm Arba'a. 29th day of Shaw'waal, 1445AH (Wednesday 8th May 2024). *_NOTHING HAPPENS WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF ALLAH_*. BismilLah.  Even though feelings of Panic, stress/worries etc are part of life, they must not reduce our acts of worship or trust in ALLAH. The more a man turns to ALLAH and focuses on HIM, the more he will feel a sense of peace and comfort, to an extent that no one knows except ALLAH. Hence those who know ALLAH, are close to HIM and fear HIM are the happiest of people, to such an extent that one of them said, in a well-known expression: “If the kings and the sons of kings knew what joy we have, they would fight us for it with the sword.” This is also what is expressed in the Qur’an, as ALLAH says: “Whoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him ALLAH will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and ALLAH will ...

HELPING OTHERS WITH INTENTION FOR ALLAH'S HELP IN RETURN

DAILY ISLAMIC REMINDER. Yaum Al-Khamis, 22nd day of Jumaadal Uula 1447AH, Thursday, 13th November, 2025.  *_HELPING OTHERS WITH INTENTION FOR ALLAH'S HELP IN RETURN_*. BismilLah.  When we help our brothers and sisters in Islam, in reality, we are helping ourselves. The Messenger of ALLAH (S.A.W) said: He who relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, ALLAH Azzawajallah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Judgment. He who makes easy what is difficult, ALLAH ALLAH Azzawajallah will make it easy for him in the world and the hereafter. He who conceals the faults of a Muslim, ALLAH ALLAH Azzawajallah will conceal his faults in this ALLAH Azzawajallah world and the Hereafter, for ALLAH helps the servant as long as he helps his brother. AlhamdulilLah.  With this I hope with immediate effect we will all strive to help each other in any possible way such as making dua for each other, supporting our relatives and those in need in ou...

BEST TIME FOR TAHAJJUD

*BEST TIME FOR TAHAJJUD* It is best to delay this prayer to the last third portion of the night. Abu Hurairah reports that the Messenger of Allah said: "Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring: 'Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?"' This is related by the group. 'Amr ibn Abasah reports that he heard the Prophet say: "The closest that a slave comes to his Lord is during the middle of the latter portion of the night. If you can be among those who remember Allah, the Exalted One, at that time then do so." This is related by al-Hakim who grades it sahih according to Muslim's standards, and at-Tirmizhi calls it hasan sahih. AnNasa'i and Ibn Khuzaimah also recorded it. Abu Muslim asked Abu Zharr: "Which late-night prayer is the best?" He said: "I asked the Messenger of A...
