We all desire the Love of Allāh—but have we truly reflected on how to attain it? Among the noble actions that lead to His Love is what is mentioned in an authentic Ḥadīth. Mu’ādh Ibn Jabal (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “Allāh Almighty said: My Love is assured for those who love each other for My Sake, who sit together for My Sake, who visit each other for My Sake, and who spend on each other for My Sake.” [Musnad Aḥmad 22030]
Subḥānallāh! What a profound and motivating narration. With Allāh’s Permission, let us begin by reflecting on the first of these four deeds that earn His Love.
LOVING ONE ANOTHER PURELY FOR THE SAKE OF ALLĀH. Pause for a moment and ask yourself—why do you love the people around you? Is it because of family ties, shared interests, or personal benefit? This is a moment for sincere self-evaluation. How many individuals do we genuinely love solely for Allāh’s Sake? Understanding this concept is essential. When Imām Aḥmad (Raḥimahullāh) was asked about the meaning of loving for the Sake of Allāh, he explained: “It’s when you don't love someone for any worldly gain.” [Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābilah 1/57]
Beyond earning Allāh’s Love, this noble act is also among the deeds that will grant a person shade on the Day of Judgment—a Day when no shade will exist except His. Abū Hurayrah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “Verily, Allāh will say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who love each other for the sake of My Glory? Today, I will shelter them in My Shade on a day when there is no shade but Mine.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2566]
O seeker of honour, reflect upon this glad tiding. There is honour in loving only for the Sake of Allāh. Abū Umāmah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) reported that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “A servant does not love another servant for the Sake of Allāh Almighty but that Allāh will honor him.” [Shu’ab al-īmān 8601]
Dear brethren, let us strive to purify our intentions and ensure that our love for others is sincerely for Allāh’s Sake alone.
I beseech Allāh to grant us true sincerity. Aameen
