FAJR REMINDER: WHEN ‘EID AND JUMU'AH COINCIDE

We give thanks to Allāh for granting us the blessing of witnessing this year’s Ramaḍān and ‘Eid al-Fiṭr. Allāh Akbar! The fact that this day also falls on Yawm al-Jumu‘ah only adds to its virtues and favor from Him.
That said, an important question arises—particularly for the men—regarding how to observe the prayers of ‘Eid and Jumu‘ah when they coincide on the same day. The Sunnah provides clarity on this matter through several Marfū‘ (elevated) Aḥādīth.
Among them is the narration reported by Ibn ‘Umar (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhuma): “Two ‘Eid came together at the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ), so he led the people in prayer, then he said: ‘Whoever wishes to come to Friday (prayer), let him come, and whoever wishes to stay behind, let him stay behind.‘” [Sunan Ibn Mājah 1312]
In essence, when ‘Eid falls on a Friday, the one who attends the ‘Eid prayer with the Imām is granted a concession: attending Jumu‘ah is no longer obligatory for him, though it remains recommended (Sunnah). However, if he chooses not to attend Jumu‘ah, he must still observe the Dhuhr prayer. Nevertheless, attending Jumu‘ah alongside the congregation is better and more rewarding.
There are a few key points to bear in mind:
1. This concession does not apply to one who did not attend the ‘Eid prayer. For such a person, the obligation of Jumu‘ah remains in full effect.
2. The Imām of the Jumu‘ah Masjid is required to establish the Jumu‘ah prayer on this day. This ensures that those who wish to attend, as well as those who missed the ‘Eid prayer, have the opportunity to fulfill this obligation. If a sufficient number gathers, Jumu‘ah is to be observed; otherwise, it should be prayed as Dhuhr.
3. The Adhān on this day is only to be called in the Masājid where Jumu‘ah will be held. It is not prescribed to call the Adhān for Dhuhr.
4. The opinion that attending the ‘Eid prayer exempts a person from both Jumu‘ah and Dhuhr is incorrect. The scholars have rejected this view, considering it weak and irregular, as it contradicts the Sunnah and implies the dropping of an obligatory act without valid proof.
Dear brothers, let us not neglect the Sunan associated with both ‘Eid and Jumu‘ah. I beseech Allāh to purify our hearts, strengthen our bond with Him, and fill our lives with immeasurable Barakah. Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum. Aameen.
