FAJR REMINDER: THE PRINCESS OF BANU AL-MUSTALIQ

Ramaḍān 18, 1447 (7-March-2026)
In our mothers—the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ)—we find exemplary figures to emulate. This morning, let us discuss one of them.
Who is she? She is Jawayriyah Bint Al-Ḥārith Ibn Abī Dharār Al-Mustaliqiyyah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anha). It has been reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) renamed her Juwayriyah, replacing the name Barrah (meaning righteous) that her father originally gave her. This was due to his disapproval of self-praise.
Her father, Al-Ḥārith, was the chief of Banu Al-Mustaliq. Our mother, Juwayriyah, was an exceptionally beautiful princess—elegant, strong, and renowned. Among women, she was one of the most beautiful. Our mother, Ā’ishah (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anha), felt jealousy over her beauty, which led her to restrict Juwayriyah from seeing the Prophet (ﷺ).
The Banu Al-Mustaliq was a tribe that obstinately clung to ignorance and paganism. Instigated by the Quraysh, they conspired to attack the Muslims in Madīnah out of fear for their rise. Interestingly, the Prophet (ﷺ) was aware of this plot before the attack could take place, prompting the Muslims to act swiftly.
The Prophet (ﷺ) first sent Buraydah Ibn Al-Hasib (Raḍiyallāhu ‘Anhu) to confirm the information, which turned out to be accurate. Without delay, the Prophet (ﷺ) mobilized the Muslim army to confront Al-Ḥārith and his people, who were well-prepared for battle. This encounter occurred near a well known as Muraysī‘ during the fifth year after Hijrah.
By the Grace of Allāh, the Muslims emerged victorious, marking a significant triumph for them. Nearly 600 individuals were captured as prisoners of war, among whom was Barrah (i.e., Juwayriyah) Bint Al-Ḥārith. This battle imparts a powerful lesson: when it comes to upholding and defending Allāh’s Religion, there can be no hesitation. However, we must do so wisely and correctly.
I beseech Allāh to make us consistently beneficial to Islām. Aameen.
