Poverty is one of the misfortunes that Allah has decreed to befall a specific human being or a family unit or a society as a trial to raise man’s status and increase his hasanaat (good deeds). However, as a result of the impatience and perseverance of man, poverty affects man’s belief and conduct. Many people have taken on a debt so that they can fulfill the duty of upbringing children, helping husband and family to pay for living expenses whilst others waste contracted debt on avoidable expenses or what is not productive.

In Islam, debt (without interest) should not be undertaken except in cases of necessity. Fath al-Baari (4/547). And the correct way of lending is that mentioned by Allaah in the aayah on debt *Q2:282-283*
*Why this topic?*
The beginning of debt is worry and end is war. The moment man needs debt he behaves like an Angel; when it is time to pay back he behaves nastily

Man will forget when he requested the debt; whether it is night, afternoon, morning, evening, Monday, Friday, etc. But when he/she is requested to pay back…
_Brother A! Fear Allaah, this is 9 pm and you’re disturbing me with the call, if you want to remind me of your money, it should have been in the morning or afternoon for Allaah’s sake. *(Please is it haram to pay the debt in the night?)*_.

_Sister B is wicked, if she lends you money and wants to collect it, she will come to your shop at noon when the sun is shining. Imagine! Demanding for money under the sun?! *(Please is it haram to pay the debt in the afternoon?!)*_
_Ah! Mama K! This is Monday morning and you’re here to collect money; gaskiya is not fair, early morning on Monday. *(Please what is wrong with paying debt on Monday?!)*_

Despite stern warnings about avoidable debt and the negative consequences of not paying back, brethren are unaware or they are aware but don’t care; some apply for a government loan with the intention to default, to them ‘it is National Cake’; and, some never think of recourse before applying for a loan with interest. As a case study, Nigeria’s total debt profile would stand at N33 trillion if the President got approval for the $22.7 billion foreign loan request.

*These are dangerous moves that will keep many believers from reaching a noble destination (Paradise)* which today’s lecture seeks to remind us all.

However, all the categories of debt share characteristics and ruling.
Debt is a disgrace and a humiliation because it preoccupies the mind and makes one worried about paying it off, and makes one feel humiliated before the lender when meeting him, and feeling that he is doing one a favor when accepting a delay in payment. Perhaps he may promise himself that he will pay it off then break that promise, or speak to the lender and lie to him, or swear an oath to him then break it, and so on.

Moreover, he may die without having paid off the debt so he will be held hostage because of it. All of that undermines one’s religious commitment.
Avoidable debt poses negative consequences to the economy as it craves desire for immediate gratification without thought of the consequences in the long run; increases lack of responsibility and self-reliance; and, poor distribution of wealth. Mawqif al-Sharee’ah al-Islamiyyah min al-Dayn (6-11) al-Jaami’ li Ahkaam al-Qur’aan (3/417).

*The debtor is being detained by his debt, so, he is a prisoner, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: *“Your companion is being detained by his debt.”* Abu Dawood, 3341; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
Islam warns against debt and urges the Muslim to avoid it as much as possible because when a man gets into debt, he speaks and tells lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.
