Allah has mentioned in the Qur’an, “O you who believe, fasting has been ordained for you, so that you may develop taqwa” (2:183). Taqwa refers to fearing Allah by abstaining from sins and performing good deeds. In this ayah, Allah has clearly informed us that fasting is a spiritual exercise, designed to strengthen the taqwa of a believer. The hope is that by abandoning food and desires for a very specified interval, we will develop the strength to abandon sins for a very specified interval – our lifespan.

The ability to ignore our hunger should enhance our ability to ignore haraam. That is the long term goal.
If we turn the clock back and reflect, we will notice that our worldly life has improved greatly. Over the years, we may have travelled extensively or moved into a beautiful home. Some may be happily married enjoying a steady stream of income, others may be starting a family of their own. With the passage of time we settle down, wisen with age and life improves for most.

Our progress in Deen should be greater than this, for that is the purpose of our existence. A comfortable life is just a bonus.
Many of us have observed Ramadan in the past. Over time, we have accumulated years worth of fasts. Thus, we must take account of ourselves, before we are taken to account on the day of Judgement. The question we must ask ourselves is; have we been successful in reaching our goal? Are we sinning more or less as the years elapse? Is our inclination towards Deen evergrowing? Are we constantly progressing or constantly regressing?

To answer this, reflect over an act of worship that you have been performing for a number years. For example, Salah. If you pray daily, have you developed the habit of reading Tahajjud Salah? If so, have you developed the habit of reading the Sunnan and nawaafil? Overall, has your Salah improved? If you read the Qur’an, have you made it a daily habit? If so, have you steadily increased your daily quota? Overall, has your connection with the Qur’an strengthened?
In addition to personal worship, reflect on the state of your character. If you struggle to control your desires, have you supressed it? If you have a temper with your family, have you controlled it?

If you backbite with your friends, have you avoided it? If you look down on people, have you stopped? If you are self conceited, have you changed? If you have bad character, have you improved? Have your struggles made you a better person, or a bitter person? If jealousy has invaded your heart, have you destroyed it? If hatred has pervaded your essence, have you eliminated it? If doubts have plagued your mind, have you dispelled it? And if you need guidance in any of these matters, have you sought it?

Analyse your progress, for your place in Jannah depends on it. Thereafter, make changes accordingly. For if we do not change, then fasting will not have the desired effect on us. Shaykh Yunus Patel رحمه اللّٰه once explained that a bullet may be powerful, but without a suitable firearm, it’s useless. When explaining the virtue of Durood, Shaykh Maseehullah Khan رحمه اللّٰه mentioned that we will maximise its benefit if we couple it with adherence to the Sunnah.
Thus, fasting is a powerful exercise but to truly benefit, we must couple it with good character and consistency in worship.

Zamzam water is pure, but a drop of impurity renders it undrinkable. Herbal teas may be beneficial to our health, but a drop of expired milk renders it harmful. Thus, Ramadan is a spiritually uplifting month, where even Shaitaan cannot harm us. But if we enter it with the impurity of sin, then we will not receive its full benefits as we should. Therefore, repent. Conquer your weaknesses. Salahuddin Ayyubi رحمه اللّٰه conquered Palestine in Ramadan. With the help of Allah, surely we too can conquer our own personal battles this month.
Fast, not to diet, but to develop taqwa

If you didn’t in the past, attempt to develop it this year and Allah will surely assist you. The purpose of Ramadan is to connect with the Qur’an. Establish and deepen that connection, as the Qur’an is your map in life. Use it, and it will guide you. Leave it, and you will find yourself lost and discontented, a discontentment that can never be removed, except by reconnecting with the Qur’an. Lastly, Eid is the reward for those who fast for a month. Jannah is the reward for those who fast from sins for a lifetime. Thus, anticipate Eid, but anticipate Jannah more. Prepare for Eid, but prepare for Jannah more, for Eid is a great celebration but Jannah is even greater. May we be amongst those who witness Ramadan, who develop taqwa, and who enter Jannah as a result of it. Aameen.
