🔺 FAJR REMINDER: UTTERING THE INTENTION FOR ṢALĀH 🔺
Jumādā al-‘Ūlā 5, 1448 AH (16 October 2026)
Did the Prophet (ﷺ) instruct us to verbalise our intention aloud before Ṣalāh?
There is no authentic evidence establishing a specific verbal formula, such as “I intend to pray four rak‘ahs of ‘Asr,” as a prescribed requirement before beginning the prayer.
When teaching the Companions how to pray, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Pray as you have seen me praying.”
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
Yet, no authentic report establishes that he instructed them to announce their intentions verbally before Ṣalāh.
🌿 WHERE DOES NIYYAH (INTENTION) RESIDE?
The place of intention is the heart. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Actions are judged by intentions.”
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1907.
Therefore, when you stand to pray, knowing in your heart which prayer you are about to perform is sufficient. You do not need to pronounce a formula such as “I intend to pray…” before beginning.
🌿 WHAT SHOULD WE DO BEFORE ṢALĀH?
Simply be conscious of the prayer you are about to perform, face the Qiblah, and begin by saying:
Allāhu Akbar!
Your intention need not be announced aloud. Allāh knows what is in your heart.
🌿 WHAT ABOUT ḤAJJ AND ‘UMRAH?
The intention for Ḥajj and ‘Umrah also originates in the heart. However, the pilgrim entering the state of Iḥrām recites the Talbiyah, which the Prophet (ﷺ) taught as part of the rites of pilgrimage.
For example, a pilgrim may say:
“Labbayka Allāhumma ‘Umrah”
(Here I am, O Allāh, for ‘Umrah.)
The Talbiyah is a prescribed act of worship associated with pilgrimage. It does not establish that every act of worship requires a verbal declaration of intention.
🌿 THE LESSON
Do not treat a particular verbal formula for Ṣalāh as obligatory without authentic evidence establishing that requirement. Strive to follow the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) and distinguish between established acts of worship and practices for which there is no sound evidence.
May Allāh (ﷻ) grant us sincerity in our intentions, guide us to the authentic Sunnah, and enable us to worship Him in the manner that pleases Him.
Āmīn.
والله أعلم
And Allāh knows best.
