A BRIEFCASE FOR YOU
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
The treasures in this reminder are worth far more than the heaviest briefcase filled with Naira and Dollars—for those who believe and understand what truly matters.
Now, listen.
The night before Friday begins at sunset on Thursday. It is the beginning of Laylat al-Jumu‘ah, the night leading into Friday.
Friday is a special and blessed day. Among the beautiful acts of worship encouraged on Friday is sending abundant ṣalāh and salām upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
So let us prepare our hearts.
Let us prepare our tongues.
Let us begin from Thursday evening and continue throughout Friday by sending blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
One simple way is to say:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ
Allahumma ṣalli wa sallim ‘alā Nabiyyinā Muhammad.
“O Allah, send Your blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.”
WHY SHOULD WE DO THIS?
Did you know that Allah ﷻ Himself sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and His angels do so as well?
Allah ﷻ says:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.”
📚 Qur’an 33:56
Think about that.
Allah ﷻ mentions His own ṣalāh upon His Prophet ﷺ, the ṣalāh of His angels, and then commands the believers to send ṣalāh and salām upon him.
What an honour it is for a believer to participate in this beautiful act of worship.
And the Prophet ﷺ specifically encouraged us to increase our ṣalāh upon him on Friday.
He ﷺ said:
“Send abundant blessings upon me on Friday and the night of Friday.”
📚 Sunan Abī Dāwūd
So let your tongue be busy with ṣalāh and salām.
A STORY THAT WILL TOUCH YOUR HEART
Ubayy ibn Ka‘b رضي الله عنه was one of the great Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
He once asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“O Messenger of Allah, I frequently supplicate. How much of my supplication should I devote to sending blessings upon you?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“As much as you wish.”
Ubayy رضي الله عنه asked:
“A quarter?”
He ﷺ said:
“As much as you wish. But if you increase it, it will be better for you.”
Ubayy asked:
“Half?”
He ﷺ said:
“As much as you wish. But if you increase it, it will be better for you.”
Ubayy asked:
“Two-thirds?”
Again, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“As much as you wish. But if you increase it, it will be better for you.”
Then Ubayy رضي الله عنه said:
“Then I will devote all of my supplication to sending blessings upon you.”
The Prophet ﷺ then said:
“Then your concerns will be taken care of and your sins will be forgiven.”
📚 Jāmi‘ al-Tirmidhī, 2457
WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS?
Look at the beauty of this hadith.
Ubayy رضي الله عنه was concerned about his supplications. He wanted to know how much of his du‘ā he should devote to ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ.
And the Prophet ﷺ encouraged him to increase it.
The reward mentioned is enormous:
كُفِيتَ هَمَّكَ
“Your concerns will be taken care of.”
And:
غُفِرَ لَكَ ذَنْبُكَ
“Your sins will be forgiven.”
This does not mean that we abandon making du‘ā for our personal needs. Rather, it shows us the tremendous virtue of frequently sending ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ.
MY DEAR BROTHER AND SISTER, LISTEN.
Do not allow Thursday evening and Friday to pass like every other day.
Use your tongue for something that will benefit you.
While walking.
While sitting.
While travelling.
While doing your work.
While waiting.
Instead of allowing your tongue to remain idle, send ṣalāh and salām upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Say:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ
Again.
And again.
And again.
Not because we expect a magical formula that makes every difficulty disappear instantly, but because we love the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, because Allah ﷻ commanded us to send blessings upon him, and because the Sunnah teaches us the tremendous virtue of doing so.
So fill your Thursday night.
Fill your Friday.
Fill your tongue.
Fill your heart.
And remember:
The wealth of this world can fill a briefcase.
But ṣalāh upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ can fill your record of deeds with something far more valuable.
May Allah ﷻ make us people whose tongues remain moist with His remembrance and abundant ṣalāh upon His beloved Messenger Muhammad ﷺ.
Āmīn.
