بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
THE COURAGE OF A WOMAN, THE PAIN OF LOSS, AND THE BEAUTY OF PATIENCE.
Alhamdulillaah! All praise belongs to ALLAH, who has preserved for us the stories of those who came before us, offering lessons in faith, courage, compassion, and perseverance.
Among the remarkable female Companions of the Prophet ﷺ was Ḥamnah bint Jaḥsh (رضي الله عنها), a woman whose life reminds us that true courage is not merely demonstrated on the battlefield, but also through service to others and patience in the face of profound grief.
Ḥamnah was the sister of Zaynab bint Jaḥsh (رضي الله عنها), one of the Mothers of the Believers, and ‘Abdullāh ibn Jaḥsh (رضي الله عنه). She was also the wife of Muṣ‘ab ibn ‘Umayr (رضي الله عنه).
During the Battle of Uḥud, she was among those who served the Muslim community by providing water to the thirsty and caring for the wounded.
It is reported that Abū Aḥmad ibn Jaḥsh witnessed her on the day of Uḥud, giving water to those in need and tending to the injured.
📚 Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr by Imām aṭ-Ṭabarānī; Majma‘ az-Zawā’id by al-Haythamī.
What a beautiful lesson! Service to Islām is not limited to one particular role. Every sincere effort to relieve suffering, support others, and serve the community can be an act of immense value in the sight of ALLAH.
HER COURAGE WAS TESTED BY PERSONAL TRAGEDY.
The Battle of Uḥud brought Ḥamnah an unbearable burden of loss. She lost her brother, ‘Abdullāh ibn Jaḥsh, her uncle, Ḥamzah ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib (رضي الله عنهما), and her husband, Muṣ‘ab ibn ‘Umayr (رضي الله عنه).
Reports describe how she reacted to the successive news of these deaths. When she learnt of her husband’s death, her grief became especially evident.
Here lies a profound lesson for every believer: PATIENCE DOES NOT MEAN THE ABSENCE OF PAIN.
A person may believe firmly in the Decree of ALLAH and still cry over the loss of someone they love. Tears do not necessarily indicate weakness of faith, nor does sorrow mean that a person has rejected the decree of their Creator.
Remember the words of Prophet Ya‘qūb (عليه السلام) when he grieved over the loss of his beloved son:
إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّهِ
“I only complain of my suffering and my grief to ALLAH.”
📖 Sūrah Yūsuf (12:86)
Even a noble Prophet experienced deep sorrow. Therefore, let us never be quick to judge someone who cries, struggles emotionally, or needs time to heal after losing a loved one.
Sometimes, the person who appears strongest is carrying a burden that others cannot see.
WHAT SHOULD WE LEARN FROM HER STORY?
🔹 Serve others whenever you can. Never underestimate the value of caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, comforting the distressed, or helping someone in difficulty.
🔹 Do not judge another person's grief. Everyone experiences loss differently. Offer compassion rather than criticism.
🔹 Remember that patience and sadness can coexist. A believer can grieve deeply while remaining hopeful in ALLAH's mercy.
🔹 Turn to ALLAH during hardship. Our faith reminds us that this world is temporary and that our ultimate return is to our Creator.
ALLAH Subḥānahu wa Ta‘ālā says:
“Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to ALLAH, and indeed to Him we will return.’”
📖 Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:156)
A FINAL REMINDER TO ALL OF US
The lives of the female Companions deserve to be remembered. Their courage, sacrifices, compassion, and devotion remind us that greatness is not always measured by public recognition. Sometimes, it is found in quiet service, steadfast faith, and the willingness to care for others even during difficult times.
May we learn to serve others sincerely, comfort those who mourn, and remain steadfast when life brings us trials.
May ALLAH be especially merciful to Ḥamnah bint Jaḥsh (رضي الله عنها) and all the noble Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
May ALLAH grant patience to everyone grieving the loss of a loved one, heal their wounded hearts, forgive our deceased loved ones, and reunite us with them in Jannatul-Firdaws.
Āmīn Yā Rabbal-‘Ālamīn.
وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ
And ALLAH knows best.
