MEANING AND APPLYING ISTIQĀMAH IN OUR LIVES AS MUSLIMS — CONTINUED
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Based on yesterday’s reminder, how can we apply Istiqāmah (steadfastness and consistency in obeying Allah Azzawajal) in our daily lives?
1. Remain Consistent in Our Five Daily Prayers
Let us not worship Allah Azzawajal only when we are in trouble. We must strive to observe our prayers on time during happiness and sadness, in wealth and poverty, and in every situation in life. Let us not confine our worship to the comfort of our homes but also strive to participate in congregational prayers at the masjid.
2. Maintain a Strong Relationship with the Qur’an
Let us recite the Qur’an, strive to understand its meanings and practise its teachings regularly, even if we can manage only a few verses each day. Consistency in our relationship with the Book of Allah is more beneficial than occasional efforts that we cannot sustain.
3. Remain Steadfast During Hardships
When life becomes difficult, let us not abandon our prayers or lose hope in Allah Azzawajal. We must exercise patience, make sincere du‘a and continue striving through lawful means, trusting in His wisdom and mercy.
4. Practise Good Character at Home
True steadfastness must be reflected in our character and dealings with others. Let us be truthful, control our tongues, forgive others, fulfil our responsibilities and treat our spouses, children, parents and neighbours with kindness. Our good character should be evident not only in public but also within our homes.
5. Stay Away from Sins and Repent When We Slip
Let us not allow our mistakes to distance us from Allah Azzawajal. Whenever we fall into sin, we must sincerely repent, abandon the wrongdoing, resolve not to return to it and, where necessary, restore the rights of those we have wronged. A setback should never become an excuse to abandon our journey towards Allah.
Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,
Do not allow wealth to make you arrogant, poverty to make you despair, people to make you abandon the truth, or sins to make you lose hope in the mercy of Allah Azzawajal.
Remember, the real test is not merely how strongly we begin our journey towards Allah Azzawajal, but whether we remain steadfast, repent when we falter and continue returning to Him until our final breath.
Istiqāmah is not about never making mistakes; it is about remaining committed to obedience, returning to Allah after our shortcomings and never giving up on His mercy.
May Allah Azzawajal grant us Istiqāmah in our faith, our worship, our marriages, our families and every aspect of our lives. May He protect us from deviation, forgive our shortcomings, strengthen our hearts upon the truth and grant us a beautiful ending upon Eemaan.
Aameen Yā Rabbal-‘Ālamīn.
