ARE YOU THE ONE?
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,
Let us talk about something very important today. It is not necessarily about doing a lot of good deeds at once, but about doing good deeds consistently, even if they are small.
You see!
Allah loves consistency in worship. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are done regularly, even if they are few.”
📚 Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6464; Sahih Muslim 783.
Think about this deeply.
Imagine two people.
The first person wakes up every night for three years and prays just two rak'ahs of Tahajjud. He remains consistent in this act of worship.
The second person wakes up every night for 30 days and prays six rak'ahs. He begins with great enthusiasm, but after 30 days, he abandons the practice entirely.
Both have performed acts of worship, but the first person demonstrates something beautiful: consistency, patience and perseverance in obedience to Allah.
The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against abandoning a regular act of worship. He said to Abdullah ibn Amr (رضي الله عنهما):
“O Abdullah! Do not be like so-and-so; he used to pray at night, but then he stopped praying at night.”
📚 Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 1152; Sahih Muslim 1159.
This teaches us a powerful lesson: do not allow temporary enthusiasm to replace lasting commitment.
THE BEAUTY OF TAHAJJUD
My dear brothers and sisters, consider these important points.
1. The night prayer is among the greatest voluntary acts of worship.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.”
📚 Source: Sahih Muslim 1163.
Imagine standing before your Lord while the world is quiet, seeking His forgiveness, asking for His guidance and making du'a from the depths of your heart. What a beautiful opportunity to strengthen your relationship with Allah!
2. Never neglect your obligatory prayers.
Our five daily prayers are fundamental to our faith. We must strive to perform them correctly, on time and with sincerity.
The Prophet (ﷺ) also taught that shortcomings in obligatory prayers may be made up through voluntary prayers on the Day of Resurrection, by Allah's mercy.
📚 Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 864; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 413.
SubhanAllah! This gives us another reason to take voluntary prayers seriously. However, we must never assume that Tahajjud automatically erases every shortcoming or replaces an obligatory prayer we have neglected.
My dear brothers and sisters, let us protect our obligatory prayers first and then increase our voluntary worship.
MAKE TAHAJJUD A HABIT
If you have been longing to establish Tahajjud in your life, start with something manageable.
Set an alarm on your phone. Choose a realistic time before Fajr, get up and pray two rak'ahs. Speak to Allah in your own words. Ask Him to forgive your sins, ease your difficulties, strengthen your faith and grant you a beautiful ending.
You do not have to begin with ten rak'ahs. Start small, remain sincere and build gradually as your strength allows.
Remember, Tahajjud is voluntary worship, so do not let the pursuit of it cause you to neglect your obligatory prayers, your health or your responsibilities.
It is not about starting with the greatest amount. It is about striving sincerely and persevering in what is good.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Take on only as much as you can do, for Allah does not grow weary until you grow weary.”
📚 Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 43; Sahih Muslim 785.
Do not be discouraged if you miss a night. Get up again the next night and continue. Consistency does not mean you will never stumble; it means you keep returning to what is good.
So, ask yourself today:
Are you the one who begins with enthusiasm but gives up when the excitement fades, or are you the one who patiently strives to remain consistent in worship?
May Allah SWT make us among those who establish their obligatory prayers, stand before Him during the night, remember Him consistently and remain steadfast until our final breath.
Aameen, Ya Rabbal Aalameen.
